College Radio

So I'm in college now and I got involved with the radio station. I'm starting an AM show, and I've been reviewing CDs for them. Lo and behold, what two CDs came in today? Could it be Clatter's "Blinded by Vision" and the new Jaco Pastorius tribute album? So it is!

More on this to come.

Also, any advice for stuff I should look out for / play on the show?

Oh, college... that memory is fading quick.

One of my roomies was a DJ for the campus station (50 watts!) He definitely enjoyed the access he had to demo's, ep's, etc. He was kind enough to copy 3 versions of "I'm Too Sexy" for me (Spanish, Regular, and extended really long remix). Now, where did I put that cassette?

Find, if you can, the Crazy 8's Big Live Nut Pack; play Johnny Q, Courage and Conviction, and maybe Love'll Find You.

It's absolutely bithin' stuff, but very obscure. People will think you're a genius.

You must do this. The future of good college music is at stake.

I'll look into those two cds.

As for the Jaco disc, I just finished listening to it and it's an amazing disc. Many of the musicians he used to play with put together a "Jaco Pastorius Big Band" and played with some of the greatest bassists of our times. It sounds great, the arrangements are changed around a bit to make them sound new and exciting all over again, and the music still never fails to inspire. My faves were Vic Wooten's "Teen Town," Gerald Veasley's "Barbary Coast," and a version of Jaco doing "Wiggle Waggle." Great CD, highly recommended.

As for the Clatter disc, any of you who haven't heard it yet should be ashamed. I f'ing loved it.

Ithaca is certainly doable if I can find someone who has a car. It's only an hour or so away and I've been meaning to get down there for a while anyway. I'll look into it.

Yeah, I've played a couple songs off the CD on the radio but right now I'm on the AM station which has a broken transmitter. Next semester though, I get on the FM station which has a range of about 10 miles over the greater Rochester area. It'll be good times :thu:

Yeah, I'll have to check with my friends when they get back from NYC whether they'd be up for a bit of a road trip.

I can Email an MP3 or WAV (MP3 is smaller) of my Band. We are heavy metal. Visit our site more more info.

We have one song that is totally finished for our Demo, and it is an acoustic song (not metal) and it sounds really good. So PM or email me if you want it.

Yeah, I've been finding places to put them in. The format of the show is that my friend and I switch off from song to song, just playing off of the other one's choice. Fortunately our tastes are varied enough and we have enough sense of flow that we can get around from genre to genre fairly quickly. My favorite transition was from Al Green to NIN to James Brown and it actually flowed and wasn't jarring at all.

But yeah, anything you send me will be guaranteed a couple of plays and chances are I'll spend a little time talking about you guys. Both my partner and I are very big on bands that are small or just starting out since that's the majority of the CDs we get at the station and since we're all part of this big bass community, you guys will get preferential treatment. Good times all around. If you have a demo CD or even an LP or finished CD I'll also look into getting a copy added to the archives at the station so that other DJs can get ahold of it if they like what they're hearing.

So basically what I'm trying to say is that we all love music here and I'm very interested in having the listening audience experience all sorts of new stuff. So send it in and I'll spin it for you. Who knows? Maybe you'll be able to start a fan base in the Rochester area.

Cool. It'd still be nice to hear you on the college radio dial, though. The stations I mentioned before would be receptive to your stuff. WSOU tends to be more of a modern rock station, ranging from emo, to shades of metal, dance, punk and other styles of rock not necessarily heard on the commercial stations. WSIA is more musically agnostic, stylistically speaking. They play practically anything they can get their hands on. I'm not kidding, either. One time, I heard them play what seemed to be like one of those SETI transmissions or other...

Better yet, I'll fire off an e-mail to one of the stations. :)
