-
I'm posting this in the name of good fun... What have you found to be a stereotype of people who play a certain instrument? Remember, we're not talking about everybody -- only what could be correct over 50% of the time. For example... Bass guitarists: Easy-going, laid back... Almost so laid back you might forget they're in the same room with you. Keyboard players: Usually digging the technical/electronic end of things moreso than those who play other instruments. Generally into home recording. Lead guitarists: There's a lot of variation in here, and it's mostly dependent on the style of music, but, uh, geez -- where do I start?!?!? Disclaimer: I play several instruments, so all of the stereotypes could very well apply to me at different times... I just thought I'd be fun to hear what other folks have experienced. On a more serious note, I wonder if the instruments influence someone's personality or if certain kinds of people are drawn to specific instruments. Scott from MA
I've had a lot of people tell me I don't "act like a guitarist". I'm never sure what they mean by that. Actually, I play several instruments too... and when they find out that I also play bass, they will say "yeah, you seem more like a bass player." I don't understand the perceived connection between keyboardists and recording. I've heard that several times on here, but I've never found it to be true. NONE of the keyboard players I know do much recording, but EVERY guitarist I know has some sort of home studio. Do I live in some sort of parallel universe?! OK... here's something I've noticed: Every drummer I've ever worked with, except for one, also plays guitar. In fact, most of my old drummers have gone on to play guitar in other bands. Botch.
I haven't noticed either that keyboardists are home recordists, but they ARE (ahem, WE are) techno-geeks. This stereotype has been forever cemented into the public psyche by the keyboardist for the Cars. And yeah, most lead guitarists are egos, drummers are animals (the Muppets hit it on the head) and bass players make the best drinking partners. Finally: How does a female lead singer screw in a light bulb? A: She just holds it up, and the whole world revolves around her... ian_dup1
There's always the good old stereotype that labels singers as egotistical pricks who can't read music. Yeah, well...*I* can read music. Ian http://www.chiaroscuro.net

DougP
Originally posted by maxcap: i've noticed quite a few drummers that are crazy neat freaks.
NOT the drummer I used to share a rehearsal space with ... one time he left a half-eaten bag of sunflower seeds under the pile of dirty clothes he had behind his kit. It took the rest of his band a couple months to figure out that this was the reason for the mouse infestation in the room (I mean, it's kind of cute to watch the little buggers scurry across the floor while you're jamming, but cleaning up after them was NO FUN). But yes, I've encountered other drummers who were very fastidious about cleanliness and other issues (such as being unable to use any bass drum pedal except the one they learned on). CraigLindsley
Two things. First, my drummer is a neat freak. To the point that he cleans our meager practice space nightly. Uses Windex once a week on his drum shells. Not only are drummers neat they are ANAL. He bitched and moaned about not having a moniter when we practice within five feet of eachother and at resonable volume. Weird Second, guitar players, why do some of you feel the need to inform everone under the sun if you are a "lead guitarist" especialy if you are the ONLY guitarist in the band. My guitar player constantly does that and gets mad at us when we tell someone, "Yeah he is real good thats why he is the only guitarist we have, he's in the lead by default. So there was also "lead bass", "lead drums" and "lead oscillator" - it's right there on the album! ... I think he may have been ridiculing the very foolishness of which you speak ... Dylan
Two observations from my somewhat limited experience: 1) Bass players can find food in a famine, and lots of it! They can also eat like a horse while maintaining a slim figure (bastards). 2) Drummers are neat freaks, and are also for some reason *really* into porn. Don't ask me why, these are just my observations. -Dylan
maxcap
I forgot about the porn thing! It's TRUE! Maybe it's because they "bang" things with their "sticks". This message has been edited by maxcap on 09-07-2001 at 05:50 PM
dansouth
This isn't true for all drummers, but it seems like a lot of them are more muscular than their bandmates, and they have more body hair. Must be a testosterone thing. (Is that the porn connection?) Drummers are curiously childlike and get a disproportionate share of the women. They're also the heaviest drinkers in most bands. Bassists seem to be either really tall or really short. The tall ones and the short ones weigh about the same. Deep notes = deep thoughts. Conversations are sparse and to the point, just like a bass line. Guitarists - where to start. Fussy. Fragile ego. Poor self-image. Any indication that they're not the most important person in the band will cause them to sulk. Never satisfied with their axe. Never satisfied with their tone. Never satisfied with their stage volume, even when they're drowning out everyone else. Thrives on communication with other guitarists, sharing licks, tone secrets, equipment stories, etc. Singers - In their own world. Not keen on helping to move equipment. Keyboard players - Intellectual. Chatty. Polite. Sometimes a little nerdy. Usually at the lower end of the chick magnet scale and always dressed for the wrong decade. Pro Jules
Viola players: On a string session a while back on material I had recorded, I was pleased to be in on the string session (I got an experienced friend to engineer it I was executive tech overseerer as they were tracking direct to my PT rig) Anyhow I got a smile from most of the quartet, but when I gave the viola plaer a cheery wave and smile, she looked down, made an expression on her face like someone just farted and then ignored me for the whole day of the session! The violinist was a real flirt in contrast! So therefore I understand first hand the old chestnut: Q - What do viola players use for contraception?
