Wierd Breakfast Foods

Recommended Posts

Nothing like a big cup of coffee and a.......... hamburger. That's what I just had. Is that wierd? You know leftovers. I don't subscribe to that certain foods at certain times of the day custom. I go by what is there. Alright, time for some popcorn, maybe not.

The whole concept of fish as part of breakfast seems strange to most Americans. Lox has worked into the fringes of mainstream American breakfast culture, but I get an odd response when I mention sable (which totally rules!!!) For Father's Day, I can think of nothing I'd like more than a table laid out with lox, smoked whitefish, smoked sable, creamed herring, herring in wine, whitefish salad, etc. Omega-3 does away with all the bad cholestrol in cream cheese, right? Kippers and eggs are great, too, but that's a whole other ethnicity.

In my early twenties I had a Filipino girlfriend who without fail made my breakfast every morning before work, it was almost always....rice and fish. But it was the way we started our day that made life really "smiley"! Should've married that chick!!!!!!!!!! :)

In a discussion just last Friday I mentioned having read that eating a well rounded breakfast was the single most powerful predictor of longevity. ( this is an established statistically valid fact) Im in big trouble - coffee is it for me in the AM. On the positive side, I noted that if you dont now eat breakfqast and begin to do so, this data suggests you could simultaneously take on a few bad habits ane still come out ahead. Hmmm... let me think about that.

Today it's organic pizza, most times it's some hearty veggie dish, potatoes, a full spread, what most people would consider a big dinner, sans the flesh. Start the day right! Ted

I try to eat a good breakfast - usually some cereal and fresh fruit (somehow I don't think Cereal minds if I eat him :D ), sometimes egg and cheese on an English muffin. If I'm really ambitious I make whole wheat pancakes and even grind the wheat myself. A lot of times though it's just a Power Bar.... LOL... and coffee... always good coffee! I get my coffee from this great dude from Cameroon who runs an African imports shop downtown. The coffee is grown organically by old friends of his in the area where he grew up. And let me tell you it is gooooood! And in bulk, not nearly as expensive as organic coffee you buy in stores that isn't EVEN as good. I wish you could see his shop, Ted, they have a lot of killer hand drums there too. --Lee
eating a well rounded breakfast was the single most powerful predictor of longevity
When I first heard this, my question was, "So what is on the positive side, then?" Yesterday breakfast was leftover spaghetti and garlic bread. Had oatmeal for lunch. Today, a big bowl of Behringers. They look like the expensive cereal, but taste like sugar-coated shoebox cardboard.

When I lived in Singapore, some people used to salt their bull's eye's (sunny side up eggs) with soya sauce. The soy would color some parts of the egg more than others. It always looked funny... tasted ok. I'm in trouble healthwise of course since I belong to the coffee for breakfast school. ;) Jerry
Originally posted by Lee Flier: (somehow I don't think Cereal minds if I eat him :D ),
WHOA!!! Lee's getting frisky! YIKES!!! For me, what I love to eat and what I usually have are two different things. I'd like to have a nice Western Omelette with the works...peppers, mushrooms, ham, cheese, onions...etc. with about a half gallon of Tabasco on it. But, what I usually have is a bowl of Total or Wheaties with banana slices, skim milk, and Equal.

Oh yeah...in response to the original "Weird foods for breakfast" idea... Being both a shiftworker and musician lead me to eat at non traditional times anyway. When I was working in radio, I'd get to the station at 4:30 am to get ready to sign on. Then, I'd do a show from 5-9 am and take a lunch break before going back to the station for production. I was ready for lunch at 9 or so, but I'd go into town and order a burger, and they'd say "We haven't started serving lunch yet." Finally, they got to know me and my weird schedule, and I'd get my burger. Conversely, don't all of us go into the local truck stop after a gig and order breakfast at 2 am?

I was just in Baltimore and a local diner was serving "scrapple" either with eggs (scrapple n' eggs), or on toast with eggs and jam. Apparently, scrapple is pig offal ground up - basically SPAM. Yuk!

For years it was sourdough biscuits warmed in the microwave, spread with Underwood Deviled ham, and a few drops of Tabasco. Then all three bakeries here stopped making sourdough biscuits, Underwood changed (cheapened) their deviled ham, and I can no longer see my belt buckle, so now its cantaloupe. :(

Gabriel... Watch it man, folks here in Philly practically live on scrapple. That's why we all have heart attacks when we're 30. I wonder if that was the Zeus diner in B-more? They have kick-ass fries w/gravy there, and it's open all night. This past Saturday, we played a club about 100 miles north of Philly. When we arrived at 8pm, the club owners provided us with free pizza and beverages. For me, this was the first meal of the day. We played around 10pm and sweated out about 30 gallons of water. The patrons kept us at the club until around 3am. We finally left and hit the Allentown exit of the PA Northeast Extension for a few of Roy Rogers' burgers around 5am. I got into my bed around 6am. I ate hummus and crackers at 3pm on Sunday with a cool water chaser... Get the idea? I eat whatever is available whenever it's available. If I'm lucky, it's something with a little nutritional value. If I'm not, I just sweat it out at the gym and curse myself for my opportunistic eating attitude.

CMDN: Pretty sure it wasn't Zeus. It was King-somethingorother. A Korean owned place. Here in New Orleans, we also die at 30. Breakfast is pretty normal - eggs, bacon or sausage, a biscuit or 3 and grits. Except it must be absolutely SWIMMING in grease. I've also seen "gentlemen of leasure" sitting on their porches in the AM eating pickled pig's lips from the jar. Not to mention a '40 of Olde English to wash it down with. Yum. :D

Scrapple is the same thing or similar to Liver Mush down here. It's not bad in small quantities. I think what we're looking at is a matter of balance. OK, and remember this. TAKE A MUTIVITAMIN EVERYDAY! I am so serious. This is the ONLY thing that heart doctors, nutritionist, etc., agree on. A good multivitamin, which means vitamins AND minerals will make you LIVE longer. It's just the truth. And you know what? If you can make it FOR another twenty of thirty years there will be DNA therapys to extend your life. THIIIIIIIIS is not bullshit!

It's the Poor Man's Speedball for me- coffee and a beer. If I eat before about 2 in the afternoon, I feel queasy and put on weight instantly. But about once a month I get up before dawn and cook a huge steak and eggs and black onions breakfast.
