I'm working on a series/parallel effects switcing system right now (buffer + phase switch + mixer + lotsa relays, footswitches and leds + a balanced output). This is a good book: Electronic Projects for Musicians But don't try to build things to save money. You will not. The price of the ICs and op amps are miniscule. However, the price of the jacks, switches, pots and the metal box to put everything in will eat you alive. And of course you aren't going to count your time into the expense, are you? But you will have a lot of fun, if you call burning yourself with the soldering iron, screaming "why won't this #!&%?!#!# thing work", and trying to find a triple pole double throw footswitch a lot of fun. I built the compressor (which was surprisingly good), and the power supply to power up all my pedals I had at the time. There's a buttload of effects projects on the net. If I were still using pedals, I'd probably build a few, but my needs are minimal nowadays. Bassplayers aren't paid to play fast, they're paid to listen fast.
