JDL
I was wondering how you get the best sound out of your bass. Whether it be a preamp, effects processor, etc. What tool do you use the most and why do you think it has the best sound? I'm not talking about body parts, namely, fingers. I'm asking about effects, DI boxes, who knows. JDL on Purevolume Bird\'s Eye View on Purevolume

SteveC
I know you don't want body parts, but I really think your sound is in your hands. That said..... I get my best sound with one of my basses going straight into my SWR amp and going through my SWR 4X10 cab. Simple and sweet. I do like to use effects, but they aren't an integral part of my sound. Mr M Pulsive
If you're not looking for TECHNIQUE answers.. then you're basically going to get the same results as a "What's your gear" thread would. I don't buy this stuff just to look make the stage look better. Seriously though... hopefully, everyone's using what they consider to be the best for them, with their budgets taken into account, of course. -Mike ...simply stating. Bob Gollihur
Aside from body parts, the ingredients also assumed included: a bass that sounds good without amplification strings (of your own choice) that are balanced and even good quality pickups that convey the bass' sound, not their own flavor good quality interconnects then comes my own comments:While I liked the sound of my Eden WT300, it sounded far better (and less Eden-like) with a BBE 362NR. It tightened up the lows and gave it a studio sort of sound, clean and smooth. HOWEVER, this sort of sound is appropriate for certain types of music, but not for others. I don't find any additives necessary for my current Kern/QSC2402 and iAMP 800 with Euphonic Audio cabs. But then all I expect is a clean and real bass sound, with good fundamentals, tight bottom end, but with warmth and clarity. I own a Digitech BP-200 but have never used it live-- it seems to turn all my stuff into a generic bass and looses the original character. If I ever do find the need for it or other effects, my true bypass pedal will be there to take it completely out of the loop when not in use. 1000 Upright Bass Links, Luthier Directory, Teacher Directory - http://www.gollihurmusic.com/links.cfm - Life is too short for bad tone -

cornbread_medhotmail.com
A BBE Sonic Maximiser. It's the only effect I use. You don't need much in the way of effects with a Stingray.
tnb
My beloved Sadowsky (pre amp off) into my Walter Woods head (flat) into my Acme LB-2. I use Monster Cables (bass and speaker). Sweeeeet.... If I do any slapping I turn my onboard pre amp on. Just a little boost on the bass and treble. For soloing a little bit of bridge pick up. If I do any muting, bridge pick up with the pre-amp on (it makes me feel like Anthony Jackson )

Methinks I'll have those for a long time. Ah, nice marmot.

Mike H.
It all depends. Usually my best sound comes from my Yamaha Nathan East. I think primarily because of its body woods and natural acoustics. Other than that, it's the SWR Bass 350 and Goliath 4x10 that do it. I'll also chime in and say "fingers" and "hands". http://www.identity5.net
dcr
My favorite sound (these days): Jazz bass, roll off the neck pickup a tad, roll off most of the tone (treble) knob, play over the bridge pickup. Of course the hands do the real work. Aside from that, the rest is just seasoning. I like minimal twiddling. But I also like to be able to coax a P-bass sound out of my Jazz when I want it. Not too hard: turn a knob on the bass, push a button on the amp, move my right hand farther from the bridge. Works for me!
davebrownbass
Ahhh...it warms the cockles of my heart to see so many guys using the BBE Sonic Maximizer. I absolutely love that thing. I want to get a home theater and add it in! But, go figure. I never use it! I do love the Rolls Red Square DI, which has a ripoff BBE circuit... Has anybody gone and gotten the cojones to drop 250 bucks on the NEW BBE DI? That's more than I paid for my nice stereo rackmount. I'm kinda wonderin' if it is great. If so, I may get one and go back to direct on my church gig...there's so many wires and little room I'm even having trouble fitting my GK there! doc taz
One of three ways: Bass > High Gain input of Peavey TNT 115 Bass > BP200 processor > High Gain input of Peavey TNT 115 Bass > wah (optional) > distortion pedal (optional) > BP200 Processor > High Gain input of Peavey TNT 115 > THEN Low Crossover output to Power amp in of 115 High Crossover output to my Peavey Microbass (20 or 30 watts) One of these days, I shall get a nice 2x10 cab with a horn, hooked to a 100 watt amp running @ 8 ohms. That will use the High Crossover output, of course. That'll be really nice. sevenstring.org profile my flickr page
schmee
roland v-bass. it's so good for the digital recording i do i use all my guitars through it as well as mics for vocals. the additonal pick up is a pain to install, but it can accommodate multiple config's if you buy separate pick ups - which ain't cheap. you can go in without the special pick up tho and get the same range of effects as virtually any effects processor on the market. to that extent i think the price is relatively cheap. what i like about it is how the pick up is really sensitive to string noise, you can articulate like accoustic, only with the ease of the electric. for example, the organ sounds on the v-bass are so expressive, i prefer using the v-bass keyboard sounds to the triton i have. you can even set different voices to different strings. no clue how it hold up ina performance tho, as i do none =p some samples - all voices in these cept percussion are bass, guitar and voice through a v-bass, sorry for the dodgy mixes... >> one too many (mp3) >> complex, complex system (mp3) >> push (mp3) --_ ______________ _ "Self-awareness is the key to your upheaval from mediocrity."
