prophetgtree Posted August 11, 2003 Posted August 11, 2003 Hey, I wanted to see since the summer is over (atleast for me, first day of school was today), I was wondering what summer concerts you guys and gals attended AND if there are any good stories you have to tell, bass related or not, let's see 'em! I'll go first. The only concert I've been to this summer (I'm going to see the Dave Matthews Band in September) was Blues traveler. It was an intense concert, just nonstop awesome music. The best part was when the bassist, Tad Kinchla, took a solo. He started off kind of quiet, and then went into the huge chords (The vibrated the ground like an earthquake), and then the drummer came in with him and that led into this amazing groove that the whole band joined in on. I was jumping up and down, it was just crazy awesome! Anyhow, share the summer concert stories!!!! www.geocities.com/nk_bass/enter.html Still working on it...
chromos Posted August 12, 2003 Posted August 12, 2003 I caught the Flecktones a couple of months ago; if you ever get the chance I highly recommend it. The music is invigorating, and they plan out their stage antics so the audience can get a chuckle out of it as well. Plus, they stick around when the show's over to chat with the fans, and they don't leave until everyone's had their chance to talk to each member. Great set of guys. Only other one I caught was Stanley Clarke and the Rippingtons just a few days ago. I went exclusively for Stanley; the Rippingtons have a bit too much smooth jazz to their sound for my taste. To my dismay, it was very disappointing. He played his Alembic picallo bass on all but one song, and whenever he's holding that thing I swear to god he uses the same annoying flurry-of-notes riff on every song. The one tune he did play on upright (which was what I went to see) was Touch off his new album. It seemed like he was playing with a "let's get this over with" attitude, so that was a let-down also. My Stanley cds have consequently been moved to the back burner, and won't be touched for a while.
SteveC Posted August 12, 2003 Posted August 12, 2003 I saw Dave Matthews earlier this summer. First time for me. Great show and good playing - especially Carter and Lessard. Just got back from seeing Steely Dan last week. Another fun show. Again, fantastic players and a great set list. Lots of old favorites like Aja, Peg, My Old School, Black Cow and good stuff from the new, too. Next week it's Fleetwood Mac. Not one of my most favorite groups, but they will be in town (kinda rare to get big acts up here in Grand Forks, ND) and my g/f got 13 row seats. Should be fun.
Mr. Phil Posted August 12, 2003 Posted August 12, 2003 I saw the Allman Brothers in July... Wasn't that bad. I'm not too much into their music but I got 1/2 price tickets. Whole stadium was filled with pot smoke lol. I like the opening band better "(I forgot the name of the guy)'s Universe" I have the program, but I dont know where it is. They were kinda light rock/jazz. They were good. Drums, guitar, bass, tenor sax, keyboards/organ, trumpet, and vocals. The sax player cam out later and played a solo with the Allman Bros. I wasn't too impressed by them though ~PHIL~ http://www.briantimpe.com/images/LDL/dots/blue.JPGhttp://www.briantimpe.com/images/LDL/dots/black.JPGhttp://www.briantimpe.com/images/LDL/dots/fuscia.JPGhttp://www.briantimpe.com/images/LDL/dots/grey.JPGhttp://www.briantimpe.com/images/LDL/dots/orange.JPGhttp://www.briantimpe.com/images/LDL/dots/purple.JPGhttp://www.briantimpe.com/images/LDL/dots/red.JPGhttp://www.briantimpe.com/images/LDL/dots/yellow.JPG
Tom Capasso Posted August 12, 2003 Posted August 12, 2003 I'm going to see the Lottapianos tour on 8/23 with my kids - they bought the tix for Father's Day. Tori Amos and Ben Folds should be excellent. My daughter and I are big Ben Folds fans. I also got to see Mean Ether, and am looking forward to seeing Mrs Grundy! patrick_dont_fret_dup1 Posted August 12, 2003 Posted August 12, 2003 Phil, you're thinking of Carl Denson's Tiny Universe, probably. They are a really tight band. I have their horn section on a couple of live recordings. I am ashamed to say that I haven't seen any concerts lately. The last one I saw was probably Les Claypool's Frog Brigade, which was back in May (I think). There are a few string bands coming around in the next few months, as well as Widespread Panic, so I'll be sure to catch a couple of those (money pending). Well, I see greenboy is back, so why the heck not....
fig Posted August 12, 2003 Posted August 12, 2003 Oddly enough, the last concert I went to was my own, where we opened for Molly Hatchet about 3 months ago. I like the opening band better We kept hearing comments that we sounded better than MH, however, I chalked it up to people blowing smoke up my a** to my face. But the newspaper article said the same thing, that people were leaving shortly after they started. My girlfriend and I hung out for their show, and thought it was great. I gotta admit...it did make me feel good to read that in the paper. Bassplayers aren't paid to play fast, they're paid to listen fast.
rumpelstiltskin. Posted August 12, 2003 Posted August 12, 2003 i saw Thursday in grand rapids, MI in july. it was a really awesome show. it was also one of the best-organized shows i've ever been to. the show was all ages, so it started at 6pm. the first band played for 30 minutes and broke down in about 10. that's right, they were completely off the stage in 10 minutes. then the next band started a little late, played a good set, and also got off the stage quickly so the third band, a great band by the name of This Day Forward, could play their set. three bands had played and finished, per the schedule, in three hours. how awesome is that? and the Thursday came on and killed. they are the tightest band i have seen in a while. i was crunched up front, in front of the PA, so i could hear Geoff singing even when he wasn't on the mic. they are such a powerful and moving band, and their fans are really incredible, too. we all sang every song through the whole show. and the night was over by 10:30. and that's really convenient, because i had to pick up my wife at the airport at 11:30, so i had plenty of time. that is the best show i have been to in a long time. robb. because i like people.
Warlock1016 Posted August 12, 2003 Posted August 12, 2003 I'll let you know after I get back from Maiden, Motorhead, and Dio Saturday night...
Guruman Posted August 12, 2003 Posted August 12, 2003 I've got a chance to see them tomorrow here in Dallas. Metallica was better than I expected. --------- -Guruman-

I did get to catch the Poison/Vince Neil/Skid Row show twice for free and the second night had Faster Pussycat, Pretty Boy Floyd and E'nuff Z'nuff (Steven Adler and Buckethead joining E'nuff Z'nuff for some Guns n Roses songs, among others). Skid Row played the best out of all bands on both nights, but, Poison brought the pyro out, so it was good to see that in light of the Great White tragedy. Also, the band I work for did a small Texas tour and a tour of Japan. It was a great experience and a lot of fun, but my liver is still hurting from it.
bassingeorge Posted August 13, 2003 Posted August 13, 2003 Hey bassers, I went to Vans Warped tour, Coldplay and a couple of Ska gigs here and there. Coldplay was amazing! There was a lot of energy, pot smoke (not a smoker though) and singing everywere! Eisley opened the show, and I loved the band too. Warped tour was crazy as hell, mosh pits and crowd surfing! Of course I ended up all beaten up but it was worth it; I had the chance to see some of my favorite bands like rancid, suicide machines and Andrew W.K., anyway, it was very cool. And at last, I went to some local electronic, punk, and ska gigs; resulting in a very music filled summer Got bass?
Warlock1016 Posted August 14, 2003 Posted August 14, 2003 Cornbread, it figures you'd catch that part of the Metal Sludge Tour and I'd miss it. There is no justice in the world, anymore.

TomTom, You and your daughter exhibit good taste... I'm going to see Ben Folds and Aimi Mann in Central Park this Wednesday. He puts on a great show, one of my favorite musicians. Maury
Wally Malone Posted August 15, 2003 Posted August 15, 2003 This past Saturday I got to see the Yellow Jackets, Cubanismo and Ray Obiedo at the San Jose Jazz Festival. It was nice to say hello to Russ Ferrante of the Yellow Jackets who did gigs with Lady Bo and I many years ago. I got to play with Lady Bo for the largest outdoor audience in San Jose this summer at the San Jose America's Festival on July 4. It's been a good musical summer. Wally I have basses to play, places to be and good music to make!
Timothy Lyons Posted August 15, 2003 Posted August 15, 2003 Saw the Chili Peppers / Queens of the Stonge Age / Mars Volta in May, two days later saw Voivod and Sepultura, two great performances. Then I saw Summer Sanitarium, still love Metallica and Ozzfest is on Monday. \m/ Timothy Lyons
_Sweet Willie_ Posted August 15, 2003 Posted August 15, 2003 I got to see Lady Bo and the Family Jewels play for free at Boedekker Park in San Francisco in July! The bass player was outstanding. I think his name was something like ... Wally Malone! The company couldn't be beat either. I got to share a bench w/ Whappo and JeremyC! I missed Clatter when they came thru Chicago. But I'm still hoping the Mean Ether or Cottonmouth DN will make it here soon. Maybe one day Yogi will bring some fraction of a Zaftig out this way, too. Peace. spreadluv Fanboy? Why, yes! Nordstrand Pickups and Guitars. Messiaen knew how to parlay the funk.
cornbread_medhotmail.com Posted August 17, 2003 Posted August 17, 2003 OK, I know they're not the most popular band among us Lowdowners, but, I just got back from the Iron Maiden show in Houston. It was great! They had all 3 guitarists back with them and had one hell of a stage show. Motorhead and Dio opened the show and both were great, but no Iron Maiden. It was great to hear those guys again. I also got to see Warlock from the board there. Of course, he and I go way back. If they come near you, I highly recommend going.
Warlock1016 Posted August 18, 2003 Posted August 18, 2003 It was cool to see Cornbread again...But Maiden tore it up all night, Motorhead was loud and proud (the way it oughta be), and Dio was a better show than I expected. All in all, a fitting close to my Summer season.
JLsound Posted August 18, 2003 Posted August 18, 2003 Haven't been to any concerts this year, 2003. My wife and I just had our first Daughter, so it will probably be a while before I go to concerts on a regular basis. I am sure what comes around goes around. If my daughter reaches an age to go to concerts and needs me to tag along (as a Driver) I'll bet I will be going often. I just hope by that time my daughter is into good music . PS. Warlock and Cornbread, this lowdowner is also into Maiden, will always be one of my favorite groups. I saw them on the Wickerman Tour. P-berger Posted August 19, 2003 Posted August 19, 2003 This summer's been so good... Coldplay back in Feb...pretty good stuff Chili Peppers & QOTSA in May...ridiculous show...caught them on a good night with John speed soloing everywhere & a bassiriffic Flea. Ben Harper (mad bass solos from his bassist and a very spiritually cleansing show I must say), K-OS (amazing), SUM 41 (not very impressed), Sheryl Crow (alright) and Medeski, Martin & Wood...all at Bluesfest in Ottawa. Anyone who professes to love the bass has to check out MMW. Best show of my life (even better than the Chilis!) Radiohead last Fri in Montreal...holy moly, that was some good stuff!! They kick ass live and the bass was crazy all over the place (and actually easy to hear...a common complaint of mine in many shows).
Lawnmower8 Posted August 19, 2003 Posted August 19, 2003 You guys reminded me that I have not been to any shows in 2003. Sad. Law school takes up too much of my time... Looking forward to the following shows: 9:30 Club (Washington DC) - Last ever Dismemberment Plan show (Sept. 1) - Grandaddy w/Super Furry Animals (Oct. 2) Black Cat (Washington DC) - Q & Not U, The Apes, Antelope (Sept. 5) - Ted Leo, Rebecca Gates (Sept. 10) - The Ex, Erase Errata, Numbers (Sept. 13) - Calexico, The Frames (Oct. 14) - Death Cab For Cutie, Mates of State (Oct. 20) I'll be lucky if I make it to any of these shows, but we'll see... "Tea & Cake, or Death!"
imAmisfit138 Posted August 20, 2003 Posted August 20, 2003 i went to the Misfits Fiend Fest on August 9. that show was awesome it was great seeing Jerry Only live. the show was really intense and the mosh pit was awesome. i can't wait to see them next year. I fell down, down, down in a burning ring of fire. R.I.P. JOHNNY CASH!
groovyjazzyfunky Posted August 20, 2003 Posted August 20, 2003 The Headhunters are playing at Jazz Alley in Seattle all week this week, but I unfortunately can't make it because I'm deep in the final stages of buying my first house this week. Anyone who has the opportunity should definitely try to catch them, though. Also, Earth, Wind, & Fire is in Seattle, on Saturday I believe. Could make for a superfunkyfreaky weekend in Seattle. I've been to a few great shows this year -- Maceo Parker, Victor Wooten, Spin Doctors, Dave Matthews Band, the Sasquatch Festival (Coldplay, Flaming Lips, many more), John Scofield, Branford Marsalis. . . probably more but I can't think of them right now. I go to tons of concerts every month, but the majority of them are for the local "underground" scene. That's where most of the music happens in my neck of the woods. Sting, John Mayer, and Dave Matthews (solo) all have new albums coming out in September, which means that next summer could have some amazing concert tours. I'm already looking forward to it. Oh -- Grand Funk Railroad is playing at the county fair this Friday, so I might try to catch that. I'm not exactly sure *why*, but I just might get the urge. All your bass are belong to us!
