SteveC
My search didn''t reveal many answers. What do you do? What is the difference? Do some types of effects work better one way or the other?
alexclaber
Most pedals work better in line, most rack gear is better in the FX loop. Alex Barefaced Ltd - ultra lightweight, high ouput, toneful bass cabs
TheBassMan
Some like to put modulation effects (reverb, delay, chorus, ...) in the effects loop, and compressor, octaver etc inline before the amp. Could be a good starting point. I've found that it depends a lot on the (pre)amp though - my small solid state combo likes everything inline, but the bigger rig everything in the effects loop (the tube preamp is way better as a first input stage than any of the pedals). Try a lot of configurations and go with the one that sounds best to your ears.

dcr
Related question: where in an amp's singal chain is an effects loop usually located? And where is the DI usually located? My main concern is whether the DI carries a post-effects signal, or pre-effects signal. Or does this vary from amp to amp? I've just never been sure about this... 40hertz
there is usually a switch so you can choose whether the DI is pre or post eq.if you choose pre, then only the dry signal from your bass will be directed to the DI port.if you choose post, then the DI signal will be affected by your effects loop and the eq.i hope i helped you a little... I think it's becoming more common to see amps with a selectable pre/post for the DI. My SWR Super Redhead is nice like that, and includes a pad so I can control how strong a signal is going to the board. My Ampeg B50R has a 1/4" out that I can run to the board. It is post EQ (and a balanced signal if I use a TRS plug, but that's not the point here). The effects loop in my Super Redhead is after the preamp. I think this is the common location for the effects loop. I hope this helps. spreadluv Fanboy? Why, yes! Nordstrand Pickups and Guitars. Messiaen knew how to parlay the funk. Rik
My Korg Pandora PX3B sounds much better inline than in the effects loop. But, since it's not a stomp box, I'm very reluctant to put it on the floor. So into the effects loop it goes...
