Lifetimer
My name´s Antonio and I am from Portugal. I play guitar but I am about to buy a Bass to learn to play it. I have been searching through shops and also the internet trying to learn more about different models and pickups. And my question is should I buy a 4 string or a 5 string bass? Is that low B string so important and is it important to every kind of music? I mean do more strings on a bass guitar are associated to a solo play of the instrument or are associated to play different styles of music: jazz, funk, etc? I should say that I would stick to play pop, latin and alternative mostly. Thank you all!
Lifetimer
Sorry you all good people here. I don´t want you to lose time answering the same things over and over again. I just checked out another poll put before: Newbie needs help. So unless you have something more to add to it, I thank you already for your attention. Goodbye now. fig
Hi Lifetimer, and welcome aboard! I would say go buy a five string bass. I bought my first five string about 3 years ago, and the big attraction for me is that it opens up so many more fingering and position opportunities while you're playing. Some people feel the four string is sacred somehow, and you should start on that, but that's just stupid. If you had a one string bass and wanted to run scales or play a gig, it would be difficult. Make it a two string bass, it gets easier, three strings, four strings, five strings, easier still. The extra string just makes your job of making music easier. Period. Just my own opinion, but six string and above are the soloist types bassists. If I could play jazz fusion and soloed alot, I'd get a six, or more, string bass. But I don't, so five string is just perfect for laying down that big, phat groove. The notes below the lowest E sound really good for emphasis, so I use them sparingly and only when I mean it. Go get a five string. You'll love it! Bassplayers aren't paid to play fast, they're paid to listen fast.
