japhy4529
brian, wow, what a sweet bass! not quite sure where to find info on the value of a ken smith bass. you may want to try going right to the source and ask Ken! I believe you can e-mail him from the website - kensmithbasses.com . btw, are you trying to trade this bass for something, or trade something for the bass? make sense? good luck either way! - Tom Bee, why you sting me? - Jack Kerouac
bryanonbass
thanks for the info Tom, i actually may be trading for that ken smith. i have a modulus quantum 5 that is just a little too tough on my hands and I wanted to get a 34" 5 string, but then i was offered this bass in trade. The guy is asking for 500.00 in addition to my modulus. Im just trying to figure out if its worth it. i have never played a smith but have heard great things about them. However i have owned nearly 100 basses in my 12 years of playing so to say I suffer from GAS is an understatement. and i dont want to take a beating on this deal if I am just going to turn around and sell the smith. Tom Capasso
Sorry I can't help with the specifics of what the Smith (or your Modulus) is worth. $500 seems low though... I think it's been a while since Ken offered P-style pickups, so it's probably more than 3 years old. I agree about calling Ken for info on when it was made, though he may (naturally) over-value the thing. Try ebay.... If you really want a 5, then this is a detour. 100 basses? I guess you are used to detours. I played a 5 string Smith at a jam for a couple of weeks, and they are fine instruments. SplitNick
You might want to see if you can get the serial number, then e-mail Mr. Ken Smith. You may be able to come out really good even if you don't end up keeping the Smith. I don't know about Ken Smith, but I know some of the higher quality luthiers are really responsive to questions from customers. Bill Conklin returned one of e-mails personally which blew me away. I bet you'd find the same courtesy from Ken Smith. jeremy c
I've never seen a Ken Smith bass that looked like that before. You'll get a wide range of prices because the bass is fairly unique. Basically, it's worth whatever someone is willing to pay for it. Free download of my cd!.
SplitNick
If I had the wherewithal I would pay a nice price for it...Depending on if the sound suits...and I can't see the sound of most Ken Smith basses not suiting me...Is this an individual who is making the trade? Ask if he knows a Blue Book listing price for it.
