meeting lowdowners in person

My travels have taken to me to Providence, RI.

(the smallest state in the union and the 13th colony of the original colonies).

Naturally I looked up a forum member, TNB. TNB is a true gentleman and a fine player. I went to his house and hung out with him and his two year old daughter. We talked about music, gigs, equipment (what else is there to talk about? ;) )

He showed me his nice basses, a Sadowsky five string fretted and a Lakland five string fretless and I showed him my Ashbory.

Fun was had.

Tonight I just got back from seeing him play with a big band in the park. TNB was playing upright and sounded great. The band was sort of a generic big band playing in the park for a bunch of senior citizens, but TNB took it all in stride and played the gig like the pro he is.

This state is one of those places where everything and everybody is connected to everyone else and of course my dad knew the people TNB's wife works for, I met another bass player at the show who knew some of my brother's friends, every building has a story, and we could tell you almost all of them.

Here are typical RI driving directions. (there aren't a lot of street signs).

You go down North Main Street until you get to the fork where Dario Ford used to be. Take the left fork and go by the empty factory building which used to be Schoolhouse Candy Company (where I worked one summer during high school) but don't turn. Then you go to where the Stop and Shop used to be. Before that it was a textile factory owned by the cousin of the guy who used to live on the the Boulevard near the house which George inherited from his parents, you know the house, it's the one with no windows. Don't turn yet, wait until you get to where the train station used to be, there's a drugstore there now, but for a while there was a Chinese Restaurant, but they moved that to be closer to City Hall and got a special zoning exemption. Turn right, go by the place where the diner that's on East Avenue used to be and then take a left and another left and come back the way you came. You have to do this because they made the streets one way when they remodeled downtown the year after the Blizzard of '78. Do you remember the blizzard? My mom got caught downtown and spent two nights in a restaurant. Then keep going, you'll pass two Dunkin Donuts shops and a Del's Lemonade truck and you're almost there. If you go past Pelagi Ice Cream, you've gone too far. Pelagi must be run by the third generation now because in the 50's they had a little yellow panel truck and drove around selling cones. They were good cones, but not as good as the ones from Newport Creamery. The Newport Creamery on Pawtucket Avenue closed but there's still one on Angell St. where you can get an Awful Awful, Ray at my high school had two of them once and then they give you the third one free. Ray's cousin Eddie used to play in a band with George's brother and they often played at the club which used to be across the street from the racetrack when the racetrack was there, but now it's a shopping center. The owner of the racetrack sold out for a huge amount of money and moved to Florida but he still comes back every summer and stays at his cottage on the cape.

Somehow I found TNB's house to get this whole process started.

Those of you who don't have your city at the bottom of your messages with your member ID, go to "my profile" and put it in and maybe I'll come visit you next.

Jeremy, if I had just given you street name you would have been screwed (ESPECIALLY by the Coca Cola building), since there are very few street signs. Plus, I don't know the names of the streets and neither do the locals.

You should have seen the lame instructions I got to get to tonight's gig. You already knew where the park was (he used to run cross country there).

Seriously folks, Jeremy is a great guy and a great bassist. My daughter was glad to hear somebody besides me (and her) play my basses.

I get the feeling that Jeremy's dad does in fact know everybody in town. By the way J, the guy that your father knows that retired from my wife's firm, well his wife takes her to lunch all the time (I think...).

That's awesome. I truly enjoy stories of camaraderie and a fellowship, especially among bass players and music players of all stripes. Thank you for sharing. I just love all the stories I read here. :)

As far as I'm concerned, I'm still willing to meet anyone of you coming to Rome, Italy, but you'd better wait for this terribly hot weather to cool down.

Fantastic, Jeremy and tnb! It's great y'all were able to get together. :thu:

I haven't visited Providence, except for driving thru a couple of times, since I graduated from college there in 1992. Apparently a lot has changed in the past 10+ years. I have a fair amount of nostalgia for the city, though:

  • It's the only city where I've played any club gigs.
  • It's the only place where I've seen Stanley Clarke perform.
  • It's one of few places in the US where I think you can reliably go out for authentic and wonderful Italian food.
  • It's where I learned to play the fantastic sport of rugby, which led to many other adventures for me -- national and international, athletic and otherwise.
  • It's where I earned my bachelor's degree and got a fine college education that continues to serve me today.
  • The train station rocks. :thu:

There's probably more, but then I'll really send this thread off-topic.

My two experiences getting together with other lowdowners have been great. Comin' Chicago way? Lemme know! :)

Whenever I make it back to Europe, my European friends, I will certainly try to see you! Va bene, ragazzi?

Ciao.

I was up in RI for the 4th of July weekend for the 1st time.We stayed at a friends home in Naragannsett Bay What a great state.

We had a blast but I do have to say - the fireworks show was really bad. Even the native RI'ers agreed.

I saw an oldies band perform in a park ( no clue regarding the name of this park) they where very good. It was near a stretch of Fast Food - a few car dealers .

I had a lemonade and brought back home two bottles of Auto Krat coffee syrup. Its quite good.

I could not find the guitar shops - always on the lookout for them but did not see one. I think I am heading back up there on the 8th? Not sure yet?

OK...

This is spammy, but screw it.

Tom "Shecky The Slidey-Chair" Capasso already knows I'll be playing bass with my Brit-Poppy band (Mean Ether) in NYC Friday August 8th at Don Hill's, Spring & Greenwich in Soho.

I believe our set is around 9pm.

I'm telling the rest of you North Jersey, New York and NYC peeps now... if you show up and make fun of my P-bass, I'll bite you all.

And if you're coming to Philly... Lemme know.

I'll be in the Philly area visiting family in early September. I don't know if I'll be getting away but I'm trying to plan a night out with my Brother. Maybe a little loud scary music is in order!?! :thu:

First, I love meeting you guys.

Two weeks back, I met 74pbass and his family. They live in W Hartford, which is near my current consulting assignment. Neither of us had bass in hand, but it was great to talk music, bands, equipment, and run around with his kids!!

CMDN - I'm in for Aug 8. You do realize I need to know what time you are hitting town so I can help carry equipment. I'm off on Friday, so I'll take whatever time you can give. And we'll get food (I have to defer the biting thing somehow).

Glad to hear about Jeremy and TNB - very cool!!

Yo Slidey-Chair...

As far as I can tell, we won't be bringing much gear. Apparently, Don Hill's has a nice backline, so I think we're bringing the bare minimum -- guitar amp, guitars, cables, cymbals, drum hardware. If you wanna carry that stuff with us, you're totally welcome. I believe we'll be loading in around 7pm or something. And there's a little deli right on the corner where we can find things to bite.

Jeremy,

Your post was fun and informative! Thanks for sharing. I love it when lowdowners meet other lowdowners and then tell us the story.

And everyone, please remember... there are some Beignets and Cafe Au Lait waiting for you here in New Orleans when you come to town!

Jeremy, "connected" might not be the best choice of words to use when refering to this town :P

Connie Z, you better hope my wife doesn't read this post, she will use any excuse that gets her to New Orleans. In fact, my favorite picture of my wife and me was taken in New Orleans.

I have seen a few people from around St. Louis here so I'm going to spam ya now.

Come on out and check out a bunch of old guys on stage at the house of Rock this Tuesday. It's an audition for a bunch of bar owners that are booked by Midwest productions.

Helen Fitzegeralds, Pops (ick), to name a few.

Plus you can meet me and laugh at my gear. It's a public place so I can't bite ya either. I think it would be great to meet some fellow Low Downers stationed here in the mid west.

See the web site for details

Thanks for putting up with the spam.

Over and out

LOL! :)

So where were you standing in the photo? French Quarter, Uptown, City Park, one of the music clubs?

Hey, I would enjoy hearing all of her stories about your bass playing! ... while sitting at a table in the Cafe Du Monde!
