Total loss of sound!!!

Well this Saturday I lost sound from my rig on stage in the middle of a song. Everything was just gone. Lights were on, and things were plugged in but there wasn't anything coming out of the speaker. The band finished up the song and I acted out the rest of the song but there was nothing there.

I frantically went over my rig trying to figure out what was going on while the guys told jokes up front.

I actually plug 2 bass guitars into my amp. One in the -15 db and one in 0db. I turn down everything on the one I'm not using. In fact I only ever use that guitar maybe once or twice throughout the whole set. Well I unplugged that guitar and turned off the amp for a few. When I turned the amp back on everything was fine. I played another 2 sets with no issues.

So either that second guitar was messing things up, which I can not duplicate or the amp over heated or something. It came right back though. It was very strange and I don't want it to happen again that's for sure. I mean there was nothing there but everything was plugged in and fine. Neither guitar worked so I guess it had to be the amp.

Maybe it's time to shop for a new rig.:rolleyes::D

Wait that's a good thing!!!! :thu:

Well, I can't remember what amp you got, but many have thermal overload circuits.

Were you loud, amp running hot? If so, that circuit kicked in. Shut down, cool off and it comes back on.

I would take the precaution of running a small fan at the cooling vents of the amp. Couldn't hurt.

One bass is active and one bass isn't. The bass I don't use often has the active pick up. I wasn't playing it at the time. Even if the there was a problem with that it wouldn't take out the other bass. I wouldn't think so at any rate. I had the amp at about 60% all night. I think I'll turn off between sets as well as the fan suggestion.

As for what my rig is?

This isn't it but this is the exact model.

It's not much but it's served me faithfully for many years. I've been wanting an upgrade actually. Just haven't allocated the funds as of yet.

I've been gigging a lot lately so maybe it's time to retire it.

Don't worry about the basses...that's not the problem.

What brand is that amp? Hartke? If so, it must be very old.

I'm still thinking it's an automatic thermal overload...you ran it too loud and too hot. Notice on your pic that there is no cooling vent on front....perhaps you had that back shoved against a curtain or something so air wouldn't circulate.

Actually it's a Crate. It was a huge stage and the back of the stage was elevated. I had my cab on the back wall but the amp was on the floor by the edge as I was on the lower part of the stage. The back was wide open. It was a very hot and humid night though. Maybe the heat just got the better of it.

It's probably mid 80's vintage. It's always worked great. I'll just have to be more carefull with it.

I did a search, and found that there is a tech site that lists this amp as having "intermittent output probs." Unfortunately, you have to subscribe to the service to go any farther. Here\'s the link.

A single instance of failure would preclude me from ever using this amp onstage again! It would become my teaching amp.

Now, that being said, use the amp, but guard against overheating. If you want to find someone to look into it, fine, but I'll bet there are better ways to use your money than chasing down a problem here.
