Ever seen a stock, black American P-bass with a white pickguard? Then you've seen my bass.

Yeah, sure, but what are ya gonna do when you live in a state where auto insurance and property taxes are among the highest in the U.S. of A.? Not to mention, I decided to go back to school a few years ago to improve my career chances...

I gotta have something to play, or else I'd be bored out of my mind. :)

Had to get that outta my chest.

Picture a black Jazz bass with black pickguard. Yep, that's it (well, it's the one I play most).

Jeremy--you traded in the Zon for a Carvin? You've never had too many loving words to say about Carvin, if I recall...

[bungled Cuban accent:] You got some splainin to do!

If I remember correctly, Jeremy didn't swap a Zon for a Carvin. He had already unloaded the Zon and then had a later opportunity to pick up the Carvin 6 for a good deal. Correct me if I'm wrong, Jeremy.

Jeremy, is this Carvin the one you've set up as a piccolo bass and use with Bassed on Jazz?

It's the Paul Reed Smith 5-string that is strung piccolo.

I have basses to play, places to be and good music to make!

Everyone's right.

The PRS V is strung piccolo these days, and it's a gas to play.

I had sold the Zon before I got the Carvin. The money from the Zon was enough to pay for four other basses. But I didn't really like the Zon (which I bought used). Not that the Carvin is a better bass, not by any means. But it's adequate.

The Zon was my "graphite experiment". I will not be getting another graphite bass. The Carvin is because I need to have a six string and I got a good deal. One of these days I will get a better one.

Wally, Sweet Willie, Whappo, and I were all drooling over an MTD 6 at Gelb Music. I think it was $3100. Maybe next year. I liked the Warrior 6 string I tried out at NAMM, too. I think that was even more expensive.

On the other hand, I bought my Fender Jazz for $300 over thirty years ago and inflation in the price of cars and houses and gasoline has gone up tenfold in that time, why not basses?

Oh yes! It was a very fine instrument.

I have limited experience w/ graphite necked instruments, but they're not my bag either.

I've been thinking about Carvin gear. I had a set of H50s in a passive Warmoth J about eight years ago, and I loved 'em. But you seem not to be that enthused. Have you had problems with Carvin products, or is this a BMW v. Chevy kind of thing where Carvin's just fine, but simply not in the same league?

I've had a Carvin fretted 4-string for several years now. It's a fine instrument. It's given me no problems.

I did replace my pickups and preamp with Bartolini goodies, and I'm happier with the sound of my bass now. However, please note that changing the electronics was definitely a matter of personal preference and a subjective decision about tone, and not the result of some kind of problem with the electronics. The Carvin pickups and electronics are very good, I just thought for my playing that I could improve on them.

Peace.
