67 Gibson EB3

I was in GC yesterday picking up an sm58 and low and behold as part of their dent and ding sale, a 1967 Gibson EB3. Well I immediately thought of our very own Tom and decided to give it a closer look.

Black with mirrored pick guards.

I threw it across my leg and gave it a plunk or two. It was surely not my cup of tea though I did like the neck size. Of course it might not have been fair because it was next to a Stingray that I had just tried out. It also had something rattling around inside it. Not sure what it was though. They wanted 600$ or so for it. No GAS pains there. Sorry Tom.

Now that Stingray on the other hand....

It's an acquired taste. You can get very used to that neck, but often times the E string doesn't vibrate properly for low notes.

The mirror pickguard is an add-on, so I wonder if anything else was changed.

Other than the scale, there usually isn't enough value to make someone select it. I thought $400 was probably closer to it's value (but I'm not an expert).

As to the sound, you have to know how to deal with it. It can do some wonderful things for ballads with that deep tone. If you go back, click the chichenhead Varitone knob to 1, boost the treble on the top tone control to 10. then set the amp to cut the bass a bit, flat mids, and slight treble boost. Then play some smooth legato line (try that theme from Roswell by Dido).

Yeah - it'll still be on the wall next time you go in....

Thanks for thinking of me.

Is it anything like this?

Chris (#6) and I were discussing the possibility of purchasing matching versions of this instrument... just to be stupid.

Matching guitars how cute!!
Yeah, we're all about being cute. That's our gimmick. We're cute. Like herpes.

The guitarist I played with for 8 years used many guitars, but most often a brown SG (and me with the red EB3). People rarely mentioned it, and I don't think it made much difference from a "look" standpoint.

Chris would have to look at the ESP, Epiphone, and old Gibsons to decide. Listen carefully and spend time with the amp EQ to decide if you like the sound - some of those instruments have "unique" pickups and circuitry. Watch the scale length and strings that you use (PM me if you want more details). Besides - Chris can just build his own...

Hey CMDN, why don't you get a strat and match him?
