Effects, effects, but effective

We saw a huge list of topics talkin about effects and or pedalboards, I know.

I am trying to buy a versatile toy, with a wide range of weird and useful sounds.

I's plan to buy a used Boss MB6 pedalboard (u$s 100) or a new Zoom 506 II (u$s 100), but when I'd read the effects posts in this forum, all the people say the best way its the stomp boxes.

The question is: which stomp boxes must be chained to take the versatility of a pedalboard?

I don't lookin for personal tastes or the typical response "I'd have 20 matchboxes" "Envy my multimillonaire rig".

Plus, the set must be the best buy concept, cheap and good, minimal and optimal.

I don't have effects, I don't have knowledge about them. But I know a Phase Shifter or an Octaver can be useless if U have an Envelope Filter and a Flanger for example.

Why would a Phase Shifter or an Octaver be uselss if you have an Envelope Filter and a Flanger?

If you are happy with what you are about to purchase, they go for it. However, I tried the new Boss pedalboard (GT-6B?) and I was VERY disappointed and quickly returned it. Yes, it was only $400, and yes, the pedals on my pedal board are more expensive than that (close to $850, plus $50 in cabling, plus another $50 for the actual case), BUT, they are much more useful than the all-in-one box from Boss that I tried out.

It's only 5 pedals on my pedalboard, but I actually USE them. I could have save a whole bunch of money and stuck with the Boss unit, BUT I would have never used it.

Sometimes you get what you pay for. If you're going to save money and buy something that you will never really like, then you are effectively throwing away your money.

Just my opinion.

I have to agree about the "all-in-one" vs. individual pedals. I used to have a Lin e6 Bass POD Pro, and right now I have a Boss GT-6B at home on trial from GC. I am brining it back in a couple weeks when I head back to the big city. It is a wonderful pedal board, with the ability to tweek EVERYTHING, maybe too many things for me. I guess I am just more comfortable with putting the 4-5 pedals I really use on my home-made board and actually using them.

To each his own, but that's the way I am going.....for now anyway.

I wound up buying a Digitech BNX-3, which is one of the all-in-one boards. I don't use half the stuff that it can do, but I quickly realized that if I were to buy a good chorus pedal, phaser, octaver, etc... I would soon be at and beyond the purchase price of the BNX-3 and still have less options if I cared to use them. I recently started using one of the effects on the BNX-3 that I *thought* I'd never use (the wacky synth, you know you love it Yogi and Lizzy.. ;) ). So, my suggestion would be to find a good multi-effects unit and go with that. Ya dig?

Definitely shop around, borrow effects, etc., before you buy... try to use the thing with your exact setup (bass, amp, cabinet) so you know what you're getting...

I made the mistake of buying the bass version of a Korg multi-effects pedal box which I had borrowed from a guitar player. The guitar version had distortion, which I really enjoyed. The bass version I ordered through a catalog had no distortion, which was disappointing. Alas, I never use it anymore.

Speaking of effects, has anyone had the chance to try out the Rocktron Blue Thunder preamp/multi-FX? I'm basically in the market for a compressor, mainly focusing my eyes and ears on the EBS Multicomp pedal, but for small added cost of the Roctron (~450? list price) I could get a few effects aswell in a single rackspace unit. I'd be thankfull if someone could shed some light into how the Blue Thunder compares (especially the compressor) with other products out there.

Pfft! You mean the sound that makes me feel all queasy? Yeah, and if it's not that one, it's that drum machine thing that comes on when you least expect!:D
