mro
I recently visted Boston's GC and liked a 77 precision(maple neck) due to it's thickness and feel but for a battered bass for $1500 was out of the question. I would like to know what years fender made big thick necks. Was it just a few years in the seventies? I don't think they make them now.. Any info on this or where to read about it would be great, so thanks so much!!
doc taz
Fender does still make them, but mostly in the form of reissues, in both foreign made and US models. The mid 70s P-Bass reissues have some nice beefy necks. sevenstring.org profile my flickr page
mro
Thanks Tazzola, but exactly what reissues, the 62 or the 57 or what? I would like to check them out. thanks..
hags2k
I know that 57 necks are wider at the nut, and they are beefier overall. 60's and 70's necks have the same nut width as modern precisions (or so I'm told) but still tend to have deep necks. New american p-bass necks are deeper than the standard necks these days, but I haven't tried a new american next to a vintage one. unkownroadband.com - step into the unkown :-)
Hepnurecords
Man, Keep looking. About two years ago a picked up a nice '76 p-bass from Cambridge Music on Heminway, in Boston, for about $600. GC can be a major rip off. The bass you're looking for is out there for a better price. D.
The Fonz
i've gotta agree with hepnu on this. if a vintage is what you're looking for stay out of GC. in fact, stay out of places that deal in music gear at all. go to pawn shops. the only way you're going to get a vintage instrument in decent shape without paying through the nose is by getting it from someone who has no idea what it is. they may mark it up more than some because they recognize "Fender" on the headstock but they're not gonna know from beans about the instruments pedigree. other than that, there are plenty of other instruments out there with big fat necks. try a G&L or something like that. there will be plenty of instruments out there for you to try and i'm sure someone slaps a neck on there that you'll like. Eeeeeehhhhhhhhh.
73 P Bass
P-Bass necks are wider at the nut than J-Basses, and tend to be fatter. I believe (and I could be totally wrong about this) that by the '70's, Fender neck thicknesses had become standardized. I do know ,50's Fender's had pretty fat "C" shaped necks. $1500 for a '77 P-Bass is IMO insane. You should be able to get '73 - '78 for under $1000. J-Basses tend to be more, but either way $1500 for a '77 sounds a tad high(it would have to be really special), but if you are still interested, I have this bridge for sale...
