fretless bass

Recommended Posts

i'd like to buy a fretless so i'm having a look aruond.... the fender jazz fretless is out of question for the price and because it scares me to play it (you have to be worth to paly on it) i think is hard to achieve your own sound on it so... i was looking for something like a cort or an aria i've seen both at the shop here in milan but i hadn't already tried them. the cort is this one (if someone had tried it or has an opinion plese reply)http://www.cort.com/basses/curbow/index.html the aria i hadn't found on the internet but is the one without the body, just some tubes makin' the border (i don't know if someone could have undersood). For the cort basses i had some feedbacks but for the aria i don't know what to expect from. I considered also a warwick but i think it gets a lot expensive....if you have some suggestion...i keep my ears...eyes open!!

My thinking is that you can always get away with more on a fretted than on a fretless. (Well, in general.) That is, a cheap fretted bass can often serve & sound pretty good, but a cheap fretless can be useless. The fretless is its own instrument, & its key is in its "singing" quality, and that is exactly what cheaper basses tend to lack. A good fretless should really resonate & sing, even unplugged.

That said, I had pretty good luck with a Yamaha RBX200F! I definitely recommend it for the price. But it's still just not the same.

Unless you get lucky & find a specific bass that's cheap AND has a beautiful voice, I'd say save up until you can make your money buy what you really need.

thank you for the advices, i'll try both the basses... i think the cort has a price is not so low web page (i don't know if you saw the link), i searched for the yamaha RBX200F but i hadn't found very much except some rewievs on activebass.com. What do you thik about ibanez? the ibanez musician isn't on production anymore i think and i think it should have been very expensive...but surfing on the net i found this one web page .. it seems good (i wuold have to play on it before saying!!!) and not expensive...i own a an ibanez SDGR and i feel good, it's a versatile bass ... i will consider also this bass...any feeedbacks

don't assume you're not worthy of an instrument. a high end instrument is of higher quality and that tells you a number of things. one the tonal quality of the instrument will be better, two the PLAYABILITY will be much better. i am currently playing a $200 (US) p.o.s. and my hand cramps. however a $2500 sadowski with a much wider neck was as comfortable as can be and i was able to play more easily.

the moral? don't assume the fender isn't for you or you're not worthy of the instrument. try it, you might think it's great.

Eeeeeehhhhhhhhh.

I happened to find a Warwick Corvette fretless on e-bay for $400. Super find for me. I had played a fretless Warwick in a shop once about 10 years ago and was floored by it's unplugged sound and amazing feel. It's nice to have finally added one to my own collection.

I'm playing my first fretless gig today of a converted fretless (I removed the frets from my project bass several months ago and finally got it setup). It has a great growl, mostly due to roundwounds eating away the neck. I'll be splitting it 50/50 with my 5-string ibanez which is smooth to no end. Playing a mix of oldies, classic rock, and improv blues, it'll be interesting to see which tone wins out.

Anyway... Several people here have done fretless conversions. Having done it myself, I'd say that it's something to try if you've got a bass laying around or feel like ploping about $200 down for a Fender Squier. Top quality? nah. Cool? Definately. That being said, go to Carvin.com and look at their custom basses. They start $560 and fretless is a free option. I'd dare say that Carvin't fretless are the best you'll get, dollar for dollar. I once played a used Carvin fretless at GC; it took me 15 minutes to realize that it was a fretless: that's how well it played.

...think funky thoughts... :freak:
