davebrownbass
Not an ounce of Italian in me.... But I gotta say I know a lot of Italians who are incredible musicians. Bassists leading that pack would be Jaco and Pattitucci. And there are a lot of others. Now I know we have all flavors of Homo Sapiens here, and all over the place, and excellence abounds...but has anybody else noticed this "Italian musician phenomena?" I had an Italian girlfriend one time as well...and she was incredible. And just look what the did to the North American tomato...it comes to Italy in the Sixteenth Century, and they make it into a cuisine. Oh, Dave stop gushing. Seriously...anybody else notice? jeremy c
What about the Rascals? Eddie Brigati Felix Cavaliere Gene Cornish Dino Danelli (ok., maybe Cornish was an honorary Italian). That was a pretty funky band. And then of course there was drummer Carmine Appice. I seem to remember some Italian singers.....Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett ( Anthony Dominick Benedetto), Dean Martin (Dino Paul Crocetti), Al Martino, and of course who could forget Fabian (Fabian Forte)? And then we have Nikki Sixx (Frank Carlton Serafino Ferrana). Those of us of a certain age will always have fond memories of Annette Funicello. Free download of my cd!. Ninja
Sorry, but Yanni is Greek. Don't even forget Ronnie James Dio (R.J. Padovani) Terry Bozzio Carmine Appice's brother, Vinnie Dean Castronovo, Vinnie Colaiuta, Pat Mastellotto, John Petrucci, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Gwen Stefani, Frank Gambale. My country is very talented, you know. Here are a few italian bassists: Claudio Golinelli Massimo Moriconi Marco Siniscalco Lorenzo Feliciati Dario Deidda and there are many others, believe me. I don't know if you ever have the opportunity to listen to them, but you can wait and listen to me on my band's demo on our website, if you want (there's also a picture section called "immagini") www.mod107.com Thank you and peace to everybody. www.myspace.com/fabrizioruggiero www.myspace.com/vanalientribute Who are we? fig
I was stationed in Sicily for three years (originally a two year tour, but my wife and I liked it so much, I extended), and heard a buttload of great musical work by Italian musicians. Didn't understand a word of the lyrics, but that didn't matter. The musicianship really did get my attention. Bassplayers aren't paid to play fast, they're paid to listen fast. davebrownbass
Did I fail to mention our own TOM CAPASSO? Really, an inherent sense of melody and phrasing is the key. Some dream in the Italian soul, maybe a psychic remembrance of ancient Rome. After all, they invented opera. And, even in our modern time, music is written in Italian. Modern notation began to be developed in the old Franco-Prussian areas, but the Italians made it leaner and meaner. Please don't take any of this as a slight...every culture (including white-bread America) has made a dramatic impact on the evolution of music. But today, as we approach Independence day, I'm just celebrating this culture. "Let's raise the level of this conversation" -- Jeremy Cohen, in the Picasso Thread. Foot
Goblin! These were a band who did unbelievable soundtracks for some great films. Not much more to say other than they deserve a little more recognition than they've had. PonderIsaac

The Bear Jew
It's so weird that this topic came up. I just watched The Godfather on DVD this past weekend. Don't you think Don Vito Corleone would have made a great band manager? And, of course, the band he would manage would be the Godfather power trio (also known as "Makin' Yer Bones"): Sonny Corleone (lead guitar/lead vocals. The hotheaded guy who flies off the handle all the time... until he gets whacked.) Luca Brasi (drums... Beating skins like a pro... until he winds up sleeping with the fishes) Mike Corleone (bass, of course. He's the guy who starts out not wanting to get involved in the "business," but winds up running the show more ruthlessly than anyone could have imagined.) I doubt many club owners would stiff them outta their pay. \m/ Erik "To fight and conquer in all your battles is not supreme excellence; supreme excellence consists of breaking the enemy's resistance without fighting." --Sun Tzu
