Me'shell Ndegeocello

Recommended Posts

So I am sitting here on a Wednesday night, doing some filing and stuff, and listening to Peace Beyond Passion, and Damn! If this is not some seriously cool stuff, written and played by a funky-ass band and a serious bass player as well.

Just had to be a bass geek and say this. :thu:

Peace,

wraub

I'm a lot more like I am now than I was when I got here.

Me'shell is one hot bassist! I first read about her in Bass Player Mag. and I have the DVD "Rising Low" in which she is interviewed and there are a few clips of her playing. She has the one song on the second Deep End CD. I need to have more of her in my collection!

Correction: she has the ga-ROOVIEST track on the whole collection. "Hammer And Nails" is a masterpiece. John Medeski burns down the barn, too.

Me'shell is the bomb! It always pissed me off that

other Maverick Records Artist's like Alanis Morrisette could sell 13 Million or whatever but Me'shell is still relativley unknown, (nothing against Alanis.) I've always thought that Me'shell deserved more props!

Oops, sorry about the double post.

Dont miss her show if you can help it...amazingly deep musical experience!! Fred on keys is out of this world, although I haven't caught the show in 2 years. T

he new-est CD- Cookie: The Anthropological Mix Tape is a masterwork as well, lots more guest artists, great performances and funky arrangements. If you liked Plantation Lullabyes then you'll like this one too....different feel but very fonky indeed!

Oh by the way, you guys should hear Meshell's 1st bass teacher...Funky Ned(Mike Neal)!! Damn is this man badd!! When you here him you'll be able to tell where Meshell gets the "muscle" in her sound. He's been touring with Maxwell over the years but may be doing gospel nowdays as well.

TROLL . . . ish.

The only place I've seen her is on the "Standing in the Shadows of Motown" DVD. She doesn't play bass, but she does sing, and that alone with the worth the price. A wonderful sense of timing and phrasing. I need to find some of her other material.

a good friend- bassist David Dyson , has toured with her several times- i saw her once at the LA House of Blues the night before i played there with..KCSB.. sacrilege!! but her band was smoking!! Gene Lake on drums , i forget the keyboardist's name , but he was a latin cat- i believe he is South American- monster player! she did the much mellower material from " Bitter" first- but then the broke loose with the funk .. dayummm!!

i listen to hear and i suspect she listened to a lot of Herbie Hancock- she sounds heavily influenced by one of my heroes, the unimitable Paul Jackson.

one thing i will never forget- i caught her sound check- she was late and she was VERY apologetic to the sound crew and her band and staff- apparently , someone botched her airport pick up - and she was very humble and that impressed me very much..

Praise ye the LORD.

Gene actually sounchecked MeShell's mudulus j because she was late- he sounded good- but not like he does on drums- i agree- hes monstrous-- he burns with the Screaming Headles Torsos- their bassist , Fima Ephrom- is another superbad cat that plays bass for MeShell from time to time--

Praise ye the LORD.

Thanks Adrian, I had been looking for info on Fima Ephron. He plays on a disc by Rise Robots Rise that I have, and I have been looking for other stuff he plays on.

(Even did the AMG and all. I also started a thread here...)

This is a serious player. The RRR disc is also very good.

Thanks again. :thu:

Peace,

Fima is one of those unsung monster players..

  • 1 month later...

I read an article about Fima in Bass Player awhile ago...apparently he's playing with a Klezmer group.

Me'Shell is a bad muthafuka. She does indeed have a Paul Jackson thing going on, and I like it.

Incidentally, Adrian, we're covering "Get Down Tonight" in a cover band I play with, and every time we play it I'm reminded of you and your dealings with K.C.. The guy needs to get over himself...
