bassjigga
There seems to be a lot of amp companies producing cabinets with 12" speakers these days. Do any of you play through these? I have always understood you want a large speaker such as 15" for the low end, and multiple 10s for mids - highs. Can the 12s accurately reproduce both or are they a compromise? What are your thoughts? Dave
Tom Capasso
Try looking at past threads with titles like "cab" or "speaker", and search for "12". I have a Bergantino HT112 that has a 12 and a horn. Heaven. My previous main cab is a 60s-70s Kustom (tuck-and-roll upholstery) with 2 12". Speaking for one of our other mods, Wally has fallen for the AccuGroove cab with the 12. Lots of us like them! 73 P Bass
I played an Epifani 12, and it was heavenly. I was comparing it to a few 2 x 10's and it was the hands down winner. I didn't buy it though (I needed 4 ohms). "Start listening to music!". -Jeremy C
Wally Malone
As Tom stated, I like my Accugroove Tri 112. It just has that "something" tonal wise I don't get from tens. In fact I sold an Eden 410XLT and an Eden 210XLT to buy it. Wally I have basses to play, places to be and good music to make!
speddling
I've used 12 inchers for 20 years. Kustom Tuck&Roll 4x12, Bag End S12 and currently an Ashdown combo with a 12 in it (either getting an othe S12 Bag End or the non horned Bergantino for it soon) I dig them the Bass the Place
Ben
I switched back to 12s a couple of years ago, I like the sound and find them plenty punchy and plenty deep. I have a pair each of Bergantino and Epifani 1x12s. Not cheap, but the real deal.
tnb
So does a 112 replace a 210 cabinet? Or do I need 2)112 cabinets to replace my 210 cabinet? I have a couple of Acme LB2s I rarely use both on a gig, but if I can go even smaller and lighter...

Some of the higher end cabs require some power, so you may not be able to replace them like that. Sadly my amp of the moment doesn't have the power to drive my 1x12 near it's 300W limit, so I can't comment from experience (stupid old guitar head amp...). tnb
I have been eyeing the Bergantinos and my wife has given her permission (yaaaaaaay).
musicfiend
aguilar makes really coll amps and I would consider their 12's but 2 10's are argueably better and in time you could add a 15 or another 2 10 depending on style. I suggest swr for 2 10's or 15's Hiram Bullock thinks I like the band volume too soft (but he plays guitar). Joe Sample thinks I like it way too loud (but he plays piano). -Marcus Miller
Ben
tnb, the Bergantino 1x12s are very nice. I have one of each, and mostly use them as a pair. I use one Bergantino HT-112 sometimes for practice. I have a GK 700 head, and it sounds OK, but if I drive it hard it starts to sound a bit farty. It's not the cab's fault, though, it's hitting the limits of the amp's power (about 250 watts). So I mostly use my bridged Stewart World 1.2 even when using just one 1x12 cab, the HT-112 really sounds amazing with a lot of power. The Bergantino 1x12s really sound good when you use a pair of them, especially the deep notes on a 5 string, so that's why I usually use a pair. For just one 1x12, I actually prefer the Epifani, it isn't quite as smooth sounding as the Bergantino, but it has more deep bass. One of these really can keep up with a 2x10, IMHO. Good luck! Bob Gollihur
Performance depends on the cab. I was pretty happy with an Eden 212xlt for a little while, but it seemed to get fatter with age, unless my aging ears changed. I went back to tens, but I very fond of the Euphonic Audio CXL-112*, it's not fat or flabby, but tight with real lows. *Disclaimer: I sell the EA stuff, so feel free to balance my opinion thusly. 1000 Upright Bass Links, Luthier Directory, Teacher Directory - http://www.gollihurmusic.com/links.cfm - Life is too short for bad tone -
Tom Capasso
I've been going to this jam where the bassist uses a Hartke 3500 amp and a Cerwin Vega cab with two 15" (no horns, very old). It tends to lack definition, and the higher notes struggle to get out. Not that all 15" cabs are like that, but these .... So last night I brought my Berg HT112. We tried a few combinations, but the guy decided to run all of it - the two 15" and my Berg (12" + tweeter). It made a big difference in the definition on the lower notes as well as better support for the higher ones. My bet is that all of the 12s mentioned here do a fine, full-range job. You just have to find the one that best suits your ears. Tom www.stoneflyrocks.com Acoustic Color Be practical as well as generous in your ideals.
