I'm listening to:

Jah Wobble-Bill Laswell: Radioaxiom

A Dub Transmission

(subtitled)Bass: The Final Frontier

Two totally unique bass players collaborating.

With an all-star cast of musicians.

The music will not be everyone's cup of tea: it combines elements of electronica, dub, reggae, jazz, and Indian music.

The clerk in the record store and I had trouble finding it, we couldn't figure out what category to look in. It was in rock!

The bass is mixed LOUD, it's the main instrument. It's very hard to tell which of the two bassists is playing when.

I like it.

I forgot to mention that if you don't know who Bill Laswell is, check out this link

Bye!

We've had this thread many times Mr. Cohen, I suggest using the search feature next time. ;)

Okay, I'll play:

Pearl Jam live in KC 6-12-03 (I was there getting soaked in the rain!! :D )

Public Enemy - Fear of a Black Planet

Deftones - Deftones (Chi Cheng is the man)

Incubus - S.C.I.E.N.C.E.

that is all.

Ah, nice marmot.

Ahhh...a return to my favorite topic.

A lot of old music, including some comprehensive "Greatest Hits" collections that are new releases. A LOT of music made with real fingers.

I've been listening to Patty Loveless, "Mountain Soul" (2 songs 'bout my family home in Harlan, Kentucky)

Also:

[*]Bonnie Raitt, "Nick of Time"

[*]Paul Simon, "The Paul Simon Collection"

[*]The BeeGees "The Record"

[*]Bela Fleck and Flectones "Greatest HIts of the 20th Century" This one is stamped for promotional use only...a freebie given to radio stations that I picked up in a used bookstore.

[*]The Stylistics "Best of" This is a UK release, has a few songs I've never heard. Parliment, "The Best of...The Millennium Collection"

[*]Joni MItchell "Songs to a Seagull"

[*]Sade, "Lovers Live"

I've been thinking about starting a new topic...after listening to the Bonnie Raitt and Sade CD's.

Hutch Hutchinson and Paul Denman are the bassists respectively. And those guys!

They just lay down a simple bass line...they don't stray. They don't solo (Okay, Paul has a solo on "Smooth Operator;" a signature solo. It's beauty is in its simplicity and logic. He duplicates it 100% faithfully on this live album.

Why do the uninformed always honor the great stretching-out, solo players? These guys are my heroes..and who I aspire to imitate. Add Lee Sklar, Paul Goddard, Tim Drummond, Duck Dunn, Chuck Rainey, James Jamerson, David Hungate. And a bunch of others. Tiran Porter.

I know, we've talked ad nauseum about these guys. But I still like to put their names out. Basically, how a young, new guy like Paul Denman is maintaining the tradition of the greats before him...keeping it simple, moving, walking.

By the way, I don't think we covered this before: The original bassist for Three Dog Night, played on virtually all their hits (before a succession of other players) died last year. Joe Schermie. Had a heart attack. In an interview with CNN, Chuck Negron said Joe had also been cut out of Three Dog Night royalties!

"Let's raise the level of this conversation" -- Jeremy Cohen, in the Picasso Thread.

Still spendin' that political capital far faster than I can earn it...stretched way out on a limb here and looking for a better interest rate.

I like these threads, I usually buy some new, good music because of them.

In extremely heavy rotation right now:

Accelerated Evolution - Devin Townsend Band

Jaco Pastorius - Jaco Pastorius (if you are a bass player and you don't own this album... shame on you)

Physical Graffiti - Led Zeppelin

Presence - Led Zeppelin (if for no other reason, 'Achilles Last Stand' is possibly the best song Led Zep ever wrote...)

At home, I'm back to Ben Harper's Fight for Your Mind.

In the car, The Roots' Things Fall Apart.

At work, Weldon Irvine's Weldon & the Kats. Irvine is a pianist/keyboardist who was one of Marcus Miller's mentors in Queens, NY. Marcus plays on one of the tracks.

i literally went and looked-

Lyle Mays - Street Dreams .. old, but so wonderful...

for those who don't know, Lyle is keyboardist and co-founder of the Pat Metheny Group and like Pat is one if the absolutely baddest musicians on the planet.

Praise ye the LORD.

....praise him with stringed instruments and organs...

Let every thing that hath breath praise the LORD.

I'm sort of in a rock phase.

1) Lush (I think it is called "Split", not as good as "Lovelife" but growing on me),

2) Presense by Zep, (someone else has this in too, good taste)

3) Badi Assad (I can't recall the name of the record), a Brazilian guitarist/singer

4) Young Gifted and Black by the Queen of Soul,

5) Anita O'Day Sings the Hits,

6) Closer to Home by Grand Funk.

Hey, I saw someone has Live At the Roxybury by Brian Wilson, is it any good? I keep picking it up but I never seem to walk out of the record store with it or the Live Pet Sounds Disk.

I stumbled on a bunch of old vinyl (remember those things? :D ) the other day in a storage closet that I haven't listened to in forever. I burned a few down to c.d. Now I remember why I kept this stuff :freak: .....I was right.

Heart - Dreamboat Annie

I still love those voices.

Yes - Yessongs

I remember when I wanted to BE Chris Squire.

Rush - Moving Pictures

Always loved the music.....something about the timbre of Geddy's voice does get on my nerves after awhile though ;) ........always has.....

Hi Everyone, Fun Topic. Lately I've been listening to a bunch of stuff to build set lists with a new band. But what I've been listening to for fun and relaxation are:

Alien Ant Farm - Anthology

The Yellowjackets - Bluehats

3 Doors Down - The Better Life

Brian Bromberg - Jaco

I really like Brombergs' take on "Teentown" now I might finally be able to learn it!

This week, it's been Steely Dan, "Two Against Nature." I needed a few days of that one after hearing the new album... Man, "Two Against Nature" is one FINE disc. (Don't get me started on Tom Barney.) :thu:

In the DVD player is "Standing in the Shadows of Motown." Watching it the other night, my 5-year-old says at one point, "Hey, this song is my favorite!!" The song was "What's Going On," the greatest song in the history of Motown. I'm so proud I could just cry! :D That's my girl. (When she was 4, her favorite song was "Babylon Sisters"! )

Oh, and Spongebob. (I mentioned the 5-year-old, right?) Hey, they've got a killer Hawaaiian band playing themes & incidental music on that show! Those guys rock! But basically I just like Squidward.

1. A local guy that goes by the name of Jon "Crawlin' Snake" Mac. He is a blues player now (my regular Sunday night gig) but his earlier stuff is really good pop.

2. Hancock, Brecker, Hargrove, Blade and Pattitucci. A live cd recorded in Canada.

3. Charles LLoyd w/Dave Holland, John Abercrombie and Billy Higgins.

4.Meshell N'degeocello's Peace Beyond Passion. It seems as though I always have one of her CDs on.

5 & 6. Work cds. Stuff that I have to learn for gigs. Mostly standards, funkier jazz, old rock and r&b tunes.

Well now I have a 6 disc CD changer in the car!!! So I've been waiting for this thread to resurface!!

Paul Brown - When the runner flys - Homework. He's in the band I'm in.

Dark Side of the Moon - My favorite Floyd album.

James Brown's greatest hits - Hit me!!!!!

Guess Who's Greatest Hits - I really like some of this stuff. Especially Undun, No Sugar Tonight/New Mother Nature, and Bus Rider.

Monkey's Greatest Hits - No shit it's really in there. It's a really eclectic collection of songs. I like it for some reason.

Moving Pictures - I hadn't listened to in a long time. Like revisiting old friends. Red Barchetta, YYZ, Limelight, and Vital Signs. Nice to see you guys again.

So often my choices are dictated by songs I'm working on for bands. And I always feel out of place in this thread somehow. Bump may have hit part of it - I don't own any Jaco. I guess I need to get some to learn what's going on, but my limited exposure to the solo work hasn't hit me (though I love the stuff with Joni - go figure). Anyway, lets look in the ole CD wallet and see what we find...

  • Cottonmouth DN - Dopecore
  • Stevie Wonder - Definitive Collection (from library)
  • Fountains of Wayne - Utopia Parkway (gotta buy their new one)
  • Wallflowers - Bringing Down The Horse (from library)
  • Mrs Grundy - Don't Pick It Up
  • Derringer,Bogert,Appice - Doin' Business As (not released in the US but available at Amazon)
  • Eric Clapton - From The Cradle (from library) - wanted to re-learn Five Long Years and Reconsider Baby in case I'm at that blues jam and nobody wants to call a tune
  • Rolling Stones - Out Of Our Heads (from library) - when thinking of blues tunes, my warped memory system remembered "The Under Assistant West Coast Promotion Man", which is a std blues with funny lyrics and Jagger attitude. It was the "B" side of the "single" Satisfaction. (if you don't know what a "B" side or "single" is, write to me)

Just put Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On" into the work rotation this morning. How cool is it that your 5 yr old is groovin' on that tune! Let it go -- just cry, dammit  -- I would! :D

Oh yeah, the track Marcus plays on is "Have You Met Miss Jones?" -- fretless, nice solo in the middle, pretty much straight-ahead jazz.

I took a trip to the local city library last night and returned with:

Brian Bromberg: BASSically speaking.

I wasn't familiar with him, but so far I like it. On this album he uses "eight different self designed basses."

Weather Report: Mysterious Traveller ©1974. This appears to be pre-Jaco. Who's the bass player? Liner notes have names but not instruments listed.

And recently borrowed, soon to be bought: Tower of Power: Oakland Zone.
