orphan wells
Dose any one know anything about the 8x8 from SWR? I have found a few reviews but no real feed back. I'm looking to try some new and different equipment and get a totaly new tone. People say it's killer but c'mon and 8 inch bass driver. will it deliver? any info is good info. thanks a million I didn't come here to play. I came here to make babies. Russfingers
I have played it at Rudy's a few years back.I could not believe the sound .Excellent and it handels alot if power. It is a little refridgerator and comes with wheels and handels.Very cool!!8X8=64in od air movement.I would try the new neodyum lites currently showing up on the market at alot less weight and the same power. SteveC
I have never played/heard one live, but I know people who have and say the thing is TIGHT AS HELL and sounds fantastic. I did have a Baby Blue combo with 2X8" and a 5" and it was the best sounding amp ever. If only it was louder.....wait a minute........ Just my 2 cents. tnb
I tried one when SWR first came out with it and it was very punchy. No idea how it handles notes below low E, but everything else sound great.
alexclaber
Again, I haven't played one myself, but everything I've read about this cab suggests that it's quick and punchy, goes lower than most (-6dB @ 35Hz) but isn't particularly efficient. I think you'd want 500W-1000W to get the best out of this cab, and with its porting arrangement and small drivers I'd recommend a high pass filter set at about 30Hz to prevent cone over-excursion. _Sweet Willie_
Eight 8s?! Try eight 5s! Or even sixteen 5s! Or even twenty-four 5s! I'll admit to being curious about Phil Jones\' speaker cabinets ! The downside with them is that they're pretty heavy due to all the drivers and the massive magnets but the frequency response and maximum spl of the big cabs is terrifying. Wonder if he'd be able to get similar results w/ neodymium? Anyway, here's the link to the sixteen 5s/folded horn monster for those who are curious. Peace. spreadluv Fanboy? Why, yes! [QB]I asked him about that and his view was that neodymium magnets would just make them sooo expensive. If was the sort of bassist that normally used an 8x10" (i.e. one with roadies or helpful bandmates and a big pickup truck) I'd be seriously considering that 16H cab - it'd be awesome on big outdoor stages. 73 P Bass
When I auditioned for my current band I played a Henry the 8 and a Goliath, with a 350 Redface. Man, what a punch! I went out and bought that same head and a Goliath Jr.. If I was younger and stronger, and didn't rehearse in basements, I'd definitely get an 8 x 8! bottomend
My friend has one of these. He plugs a Sm-900 into it. I've used it probably a half a dozen times and I dont really like it. The low end feels mushy and the tweeter is very "clicky". It's a very small horn tweeter. I think the cabinet projects alot but it has sort of a weird spread. Maybe it's because the mids are pretty "scooped" (?) If I had a choice I would definatly pass. Looks cool though....
61Pbass
I've never gigged with an 8X8 (I'm too old to lug around anything that big anymore ), but have liked the sounds I got when jamming on them. I have an early 90's Ampeg B-2 Pro combo that is a 4X8. At lower volumes (those B-2's aren't all that powerful ) I think it actually sounds better than my Super Redhead combo. Being able to deliver bass tones isn't necessarily about driver size - it's more about total driver surface area and cabinet design. Later.................. MattC
A good number of years back Guitar Center had a used Henry that I was oh, so close to buying. In hindsight, I rather wish I would have- It was nice and punchy, although you'd be right to question the really low frequencies it can produce. My feeling is this, though: If you are playing a decent-sized venue, then it'll probably have subs to accomodate the bass and your 8's will cut through the stage mix better than 10's. Given the opportunity, I'd trade my SWR 4X10 for that 8X8 in a heartbeat. Of course, if you really need those lows, just buy a 1X15 extention. Bottom line: I liked it. ...think funky thoughts... Wally Malone
Played the Monterey Bay Blues Festival last night with Lady Bo and the backline bass rig was the Henry 8x8 with a SWR350 amp. Didn't have my glasses and couldn't see any of the knobs, just plugged in and played using the controls on my Kubicki Ex-Factor to dial in my sound. It worked out great. Went to the jam afterwards and sat in using the bass of the gigging player (a MIM jazz) which I believe he replaced the pickups with Lindy Fralins. It played great. Had a good time last night. Wally I have basses to play, places to be and good music to make!
orphan wells
thanks for all of your replies! it sounds like this isn't going to be the cab for me. i mostly play metal and hard rock right now so i need the "balls" on a good note, i just recieved my Epifani 212d. i just can't say enough about this thing. first off, it's the loudest cab i have ever played. it's rated at 800 watts and i pluged my carvin r1000 in to it bridged and i swear it's louder than my 4x10 1x15 with the r1000 rig i have now. being inspired by epifani, i am now on the lookout for an epifani 4x10 at 4 ohms. with that rig and the power to drive it i will be able to blow the doors off fort knox while still maintaining the crystal clear, defined, cutting sound with just the right amount of snarl. anyone who has not tried an epifani i suggest you try one soon. thanks again I didn't come here to play. I came here to make babies.
