hockcrosse4
I was wondering if anyone had any recomendations on acoustic basses. I was looking to spend about 300- 500 dollars.

SteveC
There's a Dean at our local store. Some people might not think to much of a cheap Dean, but it plays and sounds pretty nice. If it was a 5 string, I'd think seriously about buying it. I have played a Tacoma and the sound very nice. I guess for me I wouldn't spend too much on an acoustic as I haven't ever needed one for a gig. It would be fun to have one at home for messing around, but I tend to spend my money on other things. Honestly though I rarely play it; you really have to need it for the style of music you're doing, I think. I think it was on the top edge of your price range, around $600 new. But it's been pretty nice except for some action problems I need to get resolved. Bad buzz from the 14th through 18th frets on almost all strings. And I have no idea how to fix the action on an acoustic myself.
MattC
Guitar center's usually got 4-6 such instruments on the shelf at any particular time. They comprise a wider price rnage than you've got, but it helps to play everything because acoustic basses each have a particular feel and sound that has little to do with price. ...think funky thoughts... Warlock1016
Surprisingly, the Hohners don't sound bad at all...got mine on a clearance from Mars (RIP) for 200.
bassric
Try the Ovation. I was suprised. IMHO it sounded better than way much more expensive instruments I have tried in music stores.
jeremy c
Whoa! Another Hohner owner! I bought mine really cheap at a pawn shop, they really didn't know what it was. The uses of an ABG are pretty limited...they are too soft to use unplugged, unless you are in the living room with one guitarist. If you use one in a band with drums, you will have serious feedback problems if you try to get up to band volume. Taylor has stopped makng them. In my opinion, the Taylor basses were the best (and were pretty expensive as well). The holy grail would be a used Ernie Ball Earthwood bass. Free download of my cd!. Warlock1016
Pawnshops are like treasure chests...if you know where to look, you can find some great stuff. ABs are good if you're practicing in the backyard with another acoustic player, and can't drag the rig downstairs. Mostly, I use mine to goof off while I wait for Web pages to load...curse all dial-up forever.
