...
Recently, I've been meaning to get back into working on Chromatic Fantasy. Last time I made an attempt at learning this song was a little over a year ago. I completely wussed out after about 2 weeks and put it down. So last night I got it out again and started working on all those silly black dots. Uhhh.. yeah. As stupifyingly difficult as I remember it being, dear lord. This thing is hard. After about 2 hours of work I think I have something like 8 measures down, and no where near the Jaco-speed-demon ~76bpm tempo. More like a lethargic snail's pace of 60bpm. * Has anyone here managed to work this monstrosity up to Jaco's tempo? * I rather enjoy a challenge, any other pieces of music that people are hip to that are as stupid-difficult as Chromatic Fantasy? Must. Go. Practice. (oh yeah, and if you're still lurking here Yogi, I'm working on 'You Fell' today too. I'm being a good little bass player, I swear!! )

musicalhair
Forgive my spelling here, but I've tried Recuardos De Alahambra by Tarrega on four string bass guitar off and on for the past few years. I get up to the F major chord. I actually like it better than on guitar up to that point. As I'm thinking about it, Villa Lobos Etude no. 1 might be do able. check out some comedy I've done: http://louhasspoken.tumblr.com/ My Unitarian Jihad Name: Brother Broadsword of Enlightened Compassion. musicalhair
Oh, the peices I suggested are not nearly as tough as Chromatic Fantasy, or any of the other real killer difficult Bach peices (prelude, fugue, and allegro; Ciaconne (forgive the spelling). They are good music though. Tarantella by Mario Castlenuevo-Tedesco might work on bass. check out some comedy I've done: http://louhasspoken.tumblr.com/ My Unitarian Jihad Name: Brother Broadsword of Enlightened Compassion. I'm often just as guilty of not practicing what I'm supposed to know at rehearsal - but since in this band at least I made most of the material up, I can fake it pretty well. This is a fun forum. I'm only a bass hobbyist myself, but I have a great love and respect for the instrument, and I'm learning tons from you guys. Sew, whut kynd of bayz ambz kann eyee gett 4 undurr $100 buckz? Brendan Orr
Bump: as I recall, Jaco would work a section of measures for hours until he got it perfect. But of course, it will take longer for you (or most others) to get it to that level because Jaco was really something else. Persistence is key. Just my $0.02, good luck,Brendan groove, v. BenLoy
Bump, if you get Chromatic Fantasy down I'll burn my bass. Christ, you'll probably tackle "Word of Mouth" next...bastard.
tnb
OK, I just did a couple of quick passes through Chromatic Fantasy and while it is difficult (I wasn't anywhere near tempo), it is playable. What about that 1 measure in Havona? What about the bass part in general? I have been wanting to play that on a gig for years. Maybe it's time to make it part of my daily routine. Again.
