fig
I did it once to an old bass many years ago. I just ripped the frets out and filled the lines with wood putty. There were some small chips around some fretlines, but I didn't care about that. I didn't put any sealer on the fretboard because I just didn't know to do anything like that. I served me well for years. There are some discussions in this forum, one of them has pictures. Check out the 'search' function on this forum. You'll find good info about fretless conversions. Bassplayers aren't paid to play fast, they're paid to listen fast.
dcr
Yes, a search should turn up everything you need to know. It's not hard to do, but you've got to do it right. In my experience, though, it's really not worth it.

SteveC
I did it to a MIM Jazz of mine. It isn't perfect, but it turned out fine. I put polyeurothene on the board, about 10 coats and sanded between each one. I would use it on a gig but I don't play much fretless. If I was playing a lot I would probably get something else. It was a fun project and I did learn some things.
73 P Bass
I did the same to an inexpensive bass years ago. I filled the lines but didn't cover the finger board with poly. For me, at the time, it was a mistake: I did a good job and all, but it made the bass worthless, and at that point in my life I was only playing rock at bars, so what did I need a fretless for? Kind of wish I still had that bass now... "Start listening to music!". -Jeremy C
