OK, Sam, you asked a straight question in a polite fashion, you deserve a straight answer.

Rubber Ashbory strings will not work (or fit on a regular bass). They're not long enough, won't fit into the bridge or the tuning pegs and require piezo pickups. (There's no metal in them so they won't work with magnetic pickups.)

You could tune the bass:

BEAD

or

ADGC

and explore different ranges.

You could tune it like a cello:

CGDA

which will give you a huge range without changing positions (and allow you to study out of cello books).

You could tune

DADA

and play in the key of D exclusively.

You could tune

DADG

and play along with drop-tuned guitars.

You could buy piccolo bass strings and play up an octave.

I've done all those things.

If you find anything else useful, let us know what you did. Just don't think out loud, tell us after you actually try it.

Hey, Patrick, check Morphine out, I think you'd like 'em, based on some of your stated music faves.

They's great!! :)

Of course, I could be wrong.

They jam, in a mellower, darker, more constructed way...

Check out the Morphine thread for a link to a site with some cool info...
