AVATAR CABS w/ Carvin Amp

Recommended Posts

About the Avatar Cabs, they look and probably sound great. They are cheap, and have a 2 week return policy.

Question: What are the benfits of using the "Twist-lok" cables that Carvin sells with their amps and speakers? It says it take 20% more voltage or power from your amp making it better.(?) Its on the site. If I use 1/4" cables, does it make a difference?

If anyone here has used Twist-lok cables AND 1/4, can you tell me what the difference is?

Also about the Avatars, the 115H has a tweeter and the 115 doesnt. The 115H is only $30 more. Should I get that one, or since the 210 already has a tweeter, I dont need another one?

Thanks

~Phil

BTW, I think I am going with Danymal_x's advice and buying just the head with the avatars, since they are cheaper. :thu:

Twist-Lok are commonly called Speakon connectors. They are more tightly attached (you are locking them in when you twist), and the metal contact area is bigger.

I use them, but I haven't noticed a difference in sound (I'm running at fairly low power). I prefer them for their solid mechanics.

Lots of places sell them (I bought mine from Bob G !!).

As to the tweeter, I couldn't say. The thought I have is that if you want to go out with only one cab, what would you do? Many would use the 2x10 alone, and that's fine. If you get the 15 with tweeter, you might prefer that alone, and you just turn the tweeter down when you are running both cabs (it has a "tweeter volume control" according to the website).

DX - what do you do if you want to run one cab instead of 2?

If you're going to be using the Carvin R600 or R1000 head in bi-amp mode, I would suggest getting the 115 cab without the tweeter. You wouldn't be using the tweeter if you used the 115 cab as a subwoofer in a bi-amp setup, but then again it wouldn't hurt you either. If you're just going to use the two cabs in parallel, or if you might use the 115 by itself, I would go with the 115H with the tweeter.

Most definitely... I use a 1x18 w/o tweeter with my 4x10 w/ tweeter and R1000 and it sounds very good bi-amped.

I dont use Speakons, but I spoke with Dave at Avatar, a couple of Carvin folks and several others about converting the cabs, and they were all pretty set that there isn't much of an advanage, for general use.

1/4" plugs do me just fine.

I use the 4x10 w/tweeter by itself most of the time. Plenty of power, and it sounds good. I add the 18 when I want to 'round it out.' I don't like the 18 as a standalone, with either of my amps.

A 15 wih a tweeter might not be too bad as a standalone, but I've never tried one.
