groovyjazzyfunky
Thieves in the Temple Mad Sex Partyman Although I believe Prince to be highly overrated by his devout fans (if not moreso by himself), I do dig a lot of his stuff. I wouldn't be ashamed to play probably 1/3 of it. I'm really sick of hearing about Prince's reputation as such a prolific songwriter, though. If every songwriter kept as many of their "songs" during the songwriting process as Prince does, we'd all be as prolific as him. It seems that his Bad-Song-Idea-O-Meter has never worked properly. Some songs just aren't meant to be written. All your bass are belong to us!

_Sweet Willie_
Some good suggestions already. I'd add "Sign of the Times" -- I played that once w/ a band I played with in Italy (!) of all places. I thought it kicked @$$ as a cover tune. Peace. spreadluv Fanboy? Why, yes! Nordstrand Pickups and Guitars. Messiaen knew how to parlay the funk. actrade
If I could cover songs he wrote, rather than performed, I'd use "I Am", a song Jonny Lang recorded on his "Wander This World" CD. Repetitive, but has a great beat.

jeremy c
I've played Kiss a lot. Bass line? Isn't the song all rhythm guitars? And the guitars are smokin'. I actually suggested to the band that the guitar player and I both play guitars, but they didn't go for it. I like Tom Jones' version, especially the goofy instrumental break. I used to play 1999 as well, then we retired it at the millenium, now we're bringing it back. Besides playing bass on it, I "sing" the child's voice part, "Mommy, why does everybody have a bomb" and after the line, "I've got a lion in my pocket and baby it's ready to roar," I roar into the mic. Prince in one talented mofo, as well as a true American weirdo. But he's not very bass friendly, the bass is mixed down or just drones away or is non-existent on many of his tunes. He's got the kick drum mixed way up to cover the bottom end. I'd like to hear him live to hear what Rhonda Smith plays on these songs in a live situation. Free download of my cd!. The Bear Jew
hahahahaha... "When Doves Cry" No bass on that one at all. My buddy's hardcore band used to cover "Purple Rain," and segue it into "You Were Always On My Mind" by Willie Nelson. Believe it or not, it really worked. \m/ Erik "To fight and conquer in all your battles is not supreme excellence; supreme excellence consists of breaking the enemy's resistance without fighting." --Sun Tzu
Hepnurecords
I've played When Doves Cry, years ago. We redid it top to bottom. I found the bass line. Crowd went nuts. Fun song. But that was it. Haven't touched his catelog since. D.
cornbread_medhotmail.com
Well, I was in a metal band and we covered "Darling Nikki." It was great. We added our little spice to it. We even had a female singer and didn't change the lyrics. We arranged it to basically bass and drums for the verses and added guitar in between and the outro. GeorgeR
if ya HAD to cover prince...If I had no choice but to cover prince, I'd cover him with a blanket, then throw dirt liberally. Seriously though, I haven't heard a song from him yet that couldn't knock the fillings out of graveyard skeletons - he just grates on the auditory nerves most times, ya know! _Sweet Willie_
Ya' know, I saw Prince live during the Love Sexy tour in London at Wembley Arena (I think... ). He tore the house down. The show was out-of-control awesome -- blew my mind. He's the real deal as a performer. I think he played every instrument on the stage during the course of the show -- and played them all well. A highlight burned into my memory: he sits down w/ an electric guitar on the edge of the stage (circular stage -- cool) and starts playing a real slow blues. 15 minutes later he's tearing off a wicked, raging guitar solo writhing on his back in the middle of the stage as the rest of the band (oh, and what a strong band!) blows in. Really blew my mind. Ain't no shame in covering a Prince tune! spreadluv Fanboy? Why, yes! Nordstrand Pickups and Guitars. Messiaen knew how to parlay the funk. bassaddik
playing in cover bands thru the late 70's, 80's and 90's i covered just about every Prince hit - some were pretty goofy, but I think Prince is one of the baddest cats EVER, and an amazing musician! seriously, as a writer, Prince ranks amongst my favorites and that includes guys like Pat Metheny, Wayne Shorter and Frank Zappa- I mean, one minute the guy is Jimi Hendrix, the next he's Little Richard, the next he is Miles Davis- if anyone here misses that , they really should listen to the album cuts- not just the stuff that makes it to radio. Diamonds and Pearls is beautiful and actually was a challenge to learn and play cleanly. I believe he played the bass in The Time' s777-9311 - thats a sick groove. the coolness in " I wanna b ur lover" theres a tune called " And God Created Woman" that is just sweet, inspired writing Thieves in the Temple - great song! the strings in "Damn you " - just beautiful.. Claire Fischer? there a wealth of great Prince tunes- i can think of a lot of other guys id hate to cover!! Praise ye the LORD. ....praise him with stringed instruments and organs... Ain't that the truth. The time signatures keep changing after the first verse and chorus, and that always throws me off. Great bassline though, great fun to play. I like trying to keep the notes ringing over the long rests at the start. Well, they're not rests - oh feck it, ye know what I mean.
