GeorgeR
Check out some of the entry level Yamaha basses like the RBX series. http://www.musiciansnews.com/bass/65/rbx170_bass.shtml I used to have one for about $225, and found it played ok and sounded decent for small gigs, but be prepared to replace the gears in the tuners after 3 months with steel gears (the brass ones aren't man enough for the job), and definitely shield the pups and cavity if you're gonna plug into anything more than 200 watts on stage, otherwise it picks up hum from the stage lights like you won't believe. Heck, it might even be worth putting better pups into it! Beware the lollipop of mediocrity; one lick and you suck forever.
jeremy c
Get a used Mexican Fender Jazz. If you're lucky, you can find one used in that price range. Meanwhile, I played for 5 years before I got a good bass, it can be done. Free download of my cd!.
sam 2000
i would see if the company Samick makes a bass they made my guitar which sounds incredible(it has 2 single coil duncan bickups and one double coil humbcker also duncan as the bridge pickup seven switch pickup selectorand a wilkinson floating tremelo) and it was only like
Mike Dawson
I'm about to buy a used Ibanez sr405 for $200 w/o case at a local store. I'm pretty psyched. *Howard Zinn for President* **Pilsner Urquell for President of Beers!**
sam 2000
personally i hat the ibanez basses all though they do make a pretty mean tuba
wraub
I hat misspellers. Ibanez makes good and bad, as do all the others who make guitars and basses. All tubas rock, as they are both musical and a wastecan. Peace, wraub I'm a lot more like I am now than I was when I got here.

I could suggest a new bass in that price range (a Dean) but it might not be any better than what you've got. bruiser
Adamixoye
Who said Samick? My first bass was a 5-string Samick that I got, with 40-watt Crate amp, for a total of $250 or so (maybe only the bass was $250, total about $300 or so, don't remember for sure, 6 years ago). Anyway, while not the best bass, it didn't suck. I didn't bother to trade it in when I got my 6-string Hohner, I still own it as a backup. It was a decent deal. I'd imagine there's a lot under $300 if you're willing to go used. I believe that is the greatest reply I\'ve ever read! I\'m not even joking. -- justinruins
phizz
I was going ot mention the yamaha i think i saw them at musicians friend for under $200, mine is great i've had it for 2 or 3 years haven't had a problem with it....
Chito
One more vote for Yamaha Last year I bought a BB405 (5 string) for $350 but you can find the 4 string model (BB404) for less than $300. Feels good, sounds good, I think for the price it rocks!

As with all the majors, they make good and bad stuff, you have to find a good one. Play and see... Peace, wraub I'm a lot more like I am now than I was when I got here. ClarkW
I'll agree that Yamaha makes some good low-end basses. I picked up a used Attitude 4-string a few years ago for $275, and still use it for a few gigs despite having two Peavy Cirrus 5-strings in my arsenal. craigb
If you are looking for a 4-string Sam Ash is blowing out the apparently obsoleted Yamaha RBX-760 for $279 (original list $750). 2 humbuckers, active 2-band eq, alder body (ash cap), rw board, gold hardware, 24 frets. jeremy c
Musicians Friend has a Rogue that they are blowing out for $79. But a $200 bass is really much better than a $100 bass, there are only tiny differences. Keep playing the bass you have and save up for a $1000 bass. Free download of my cd!. I played a bunch of very nice Mexi-Fenders when I was on cheap-ass bass search 2003... which resulting in the purchase of the Sterling. Do not take Jeremy's second comment lightly. Don't fall into the thought process that 'the more expensive my gear is the better I'll be'. This is hardly the case. A bad player is going to sound like a bad player, regardless of what instrument they are using.
Connie Z
This is not an endorsement of the begginer bass I play, it is a "review": Ibanez GSR200 - Approx $200 I love the thin neck, because I have small hands I love the look I don't mind the weight (I think it's actually pretty average in weight) I don't play well enough yet to be very concerned with the sound/tone. As long as it sounds "bassy" I am satisfied. So, I can't comment on the sound/tone. I dislike the electonics. The knobs (pots?) have never worked correctly, and the neck pickup has something loose in it that causes it to go out from time to time, and then I have to tap on it to get it working again. I have had it looked at twice by professionals who could find nothing wrong. I play with a pick, but when my bandmate plays it with his fingers, that is when the pickup usually goes out, when he uses it for a thumb rest. It only goes out on me just occasionally, but for him, almost every time. So, I turn off that pickup and just use the bridge pickup. I am going to replace the pickups with Rio-Grande I think, and then I think I will love my bass. But I will definately step-up to a better bass when I buy a new one. Hope this info will help you make a decision. ...
