I find that victor bailey is a supreme oriented, swing, funk bassist. And Its looks through media that he dont get the respect that he should. He not put out a lot of albums but he's been playing over seas with his band on tour and playing at festivals and such. But now he's a leader having being he a solo artist full time now.He has calmed down a lot on his new album,he's not worried about bass melodies and solo's, he wanted to create good music.

I saw Victor Bailey a year back in a small club along with "Buddha" Dickens, TM Stevens, and John Patitucci.

Victor can do all that fast showy stuff. He uses it only when he needs it. And shows incredible good taste in his playing (he can sing as well).

It's not my kind of music, but the guy shines!!

Oh, believe me, Victor Bailey is a highly respected bassist! What would make you think he gets no respect? You really need to delve deep in some research! Not only has he played for Madonna and Michael Jackson in the pop world, he's also played for Joe Zawinal's 'Weather Report' and for Metro (a jazz fusion band) among many many other gigs! He is highly respected!

DWBass, is that you in the pic with Victor Bailey at Guitar Center.

Hmmmm....Columbo Brown here.

I see you are playing a Vic Bailey Sig Bass, and there are several behind you as well.

And Vic is wearing his signature hat.

Seems to be plugged into an Acoustic Image Contra...light enough to carry on a plane.

You have a nametag on. The rack behind you is made of PVC...not intended to be permanent.

Was this a DW road trip to Anaheim to the NAMM show in January?

at any rate, lucky guy.

Everyone wears a nametag at NAMM, you just can't see Marcus'. I was in that room at the same time as Victor, but not at the same time as Victor and Marcus. Those basses are very nice.

Wally and I went the the Bass Bash at NAMM. Victor's little segment was pretty impressive, especially since we had just heard nine other monstrous bassists.

Then Victor looked out into the audience and said, "Hey, Omar, get up here!"

It was Omar Hakim, who was sitting right next to me.

The two of them (no rehearsal of course) then ripped into Weather Report's Birdland, with Victor playing all the parts at once on his four string bass.

Whew!

Following is an extract of Jaco's interview

with Bill Milkowski in 1984

Bill Milkowski - What advice do you have for young bassists?

Jaco-Learn tunes. Learn melodies. Most bass players make the mistake of just learning bass lines and nothing else. But you have to concentrate on learning a piece of music thoroughly, which includes melody and harmony and theory as well- mainly the melody, though. All bass players should become more melody-conscious.

Bill Milkowski -Are there any young bass players coming up today who you find exciting?

Jaco-Charlie Haden and Steve Swallow [laughs]. No, seriously, I'd say Marcus Miller. He's a beautiful cat. Victor Bailey [Weather Reports most recent bassist] is playing beautifully. Mark Egan is beautiful. He's a great player. I also dig Andy Gonzales.
