tube in the preamp

I've got an Eden Metro with a tube in one of the preamps. How often should this tube be replaced? And how do I know it's time to do this? Could I use any 12ax7 tubes, or should I order factory's own? Is there a big difference in tubes of one type (12ax7)?

Many Q's, but I hope I can get some A's for some of them.....!

Most single tube preamps go fairly easy on the tube......it should last 1-3 yrs depending on usage.

It will sound bad.

Sometimes in extreme cases- glassy, almost phasy sounding.

Should be able to use any 12ax7.

There are good number of choices out there though.....ranging from a few $$ to $100 plus.

I believe so.

YMMV

I'm still trying to decide what tube to put in my SWR Grand Prix - the original tube in there is definitely past its best. I've found quite a lot of info on the web recommending good tubes for this preamp, particularly 5751 tubes but they're all NOS and I've yet to find anyone that stocks them. Has anyone got any recommendations for tubes for this preamp design that are still available? Pete, what have you got in your SWR head?

Helge, I'm not a tube person. Here is another thread where we talked about tubes. It's not exactly an answer to your questions, but may have some other insight. And it includes luthier Jack Read's funny bit on how to tell when a tube is bad.

My SWR Mo Bass came stock with a Groove Tubes 12ax7.

I snatched that baby outta there quicker than a weasel snatching eggs in a hen house, and put in a Telefunken ECC83. But alas, I see they are very hard to come by nowadays.

The Telefunken added much warmth and depth to the Mo...vs the stock tube.

Well worth the $110 bucks IMO.
