SplitNick
I was listening to the the Scofield album A-Gogo. I believe the fifth track is the one. The main progression seems to be A7, D7, E7b11 (i belive). The melody seems to be geared towards D major, but the groove seems to go along in G major (a dorian). Finding a good key to solo seems to be a problem for me. David R
If you could be more specific about which song you're inquiring about, I could help. It seems like you're talking about "Jeep On 35." The head progression is: A7 | D7 | E7#9 | E7#9 :|| G|| Bridge is based around C7#9 and Fmaj7. Scofield's solo is over the A7 | D7 | E7#9 vamp. A mixolydian (D major) fits all those chords very nicely. You can throw the b3 over the A7 as well. Medeski's solo is on the bridge. SplitNick
I beleive that is the one. Starts out with acoustic. Unfortunately I do not have the song list as a buddy of mine gave me the CD. The D mixolydian is how I've been soloing over it, but I have been using a C# that sounds nice (there is a c# in the melody). There is a modulation also to C dorian but that one is not to tough to figure out. I just get so involved in propriety of scales that even though I can use the C#, I am thinking to myself don't do that (even though it sounds nice at certain points). Also a D# works nicely but that is just as a little blues lick. Anyway thanks for your input. Do you agree that Scofield is extremely vocal with this particualr song? I can almost hear lyrics that do not exist. David R
Yeah -- it's a very vocal melody. He even whistles it in tandem with Medeski's organ. On his CD Uberjam there's a tune that's a blatant rip-off of "Jeep on 35." Anyway, yes, it seems like you've got a handle on the theory. Just play what feels natural to you.
