Llarion

Recommended Posts

Hello, fellow bassers! I've been hanging in the Keyboard Corner for a coupla years now, being a multi-instrumentalist, and it occured to me that since bass is probably my best instrument, I oughtta come check the scene here too.

So, hi!

What do I do now? :freak:

If this is the part where the hazing begins, let me know if I need a cup. :)

Cheers!

Eh... hey... how's it going?

For your bass forum hazing, you must write everything in the third person for at 10 posts.

Woooo... I'm wacky and out of control.

Welcome, Phil!

I've actually been flaming another new poster(as have others) for about a week but he doesn't seem to notice. Generally we're so polite around here, that even the flames are pleasant and nobody gets really pissed off. (or if they do, we never see them around here again.) :D

You passed the first test by written a polite, well-written post. ;)

I checked out your cd, it's pretty nice, a little smoother than my tastes, but that's ok. I'm on a bunch of cds in the smooth jazz category on cdbaby too, so who am I to talk.

Welcome to the Lowdown, and we look forward to your contributions.

Welcome to the Lowdown, Phil.

For hazing I would suggest for you to listen Mingus, Hinton, Pastorius, Wooten, Entwistle, Graham, Jamerson, Clarke and Prestia for at least 24 hours strait...as these are the names you will see every week in a "Who's your favorite bassist", "Who is the best bassist," or "John Doe v. Larry Joe, who is better?" thread that pops up occasionally.

Welcome to the Lowdown...simply the most articulate and user friendly bass talk site on the web.

Not too much in the way of profanity and sex talk...although we do some of it.

So, Ya Wanna Get Flamed. Hmmm.

Well!

We think we're going to like it here... You appeal to our nobler sensibilities. :)

Now, as to proper topics to discuss, We'll admit that we are most heavily influenced on the bass by Will Lee, Charles Meeks (dating myself horribly), Lee Sklar, Jimmy Johnson, and Ben Wolfe.

We are fans of Marcus Miller, John Pattitucci and whatzis name that played for Kenny Loggins for so long.

Our basses are humble, but distinguished. A 1983 Peavey Foundation (that you will have to collectively pry from our cold, dead fingers) and a 2001 cheapie Carlo Robelli fretless that we just recently strung with these cool English flatwounds that were dipped in black nylon, they sound like a standup.

How are we doing so far? :D

Cheers!

Hi Llarion, and welcome. I have good news and bad news. The bad news is, "we" is still first person. You need to go more for the "he," "she," or "it" thing. (An example: Llarion apologizes for confusing his person. He will try harder with his next post.) The good news is, you can still redeem yourself. Please diagram the following sentence:

KoRn RuLeZ.

Good luck, I know you can do it.

 Nice to have you with us!

Indeed, welcome, sir!

We wish you and yours a joyous posting time here at our forum, where...

Wait a minute...That third person thing is for new posters! Not for me! I can express myself singularly!

At any rate, we wish you well (damn, we did it again!)

And again right there! We can't stop saying it!

We need a break... AAAGGHH!

Peace,

Phil also realized, in a fit of pique, that he intended to respond to this post:

To appropriately answer the question, Phil would respond that, after getting a helping of "Late Night TV" you are a sublime slap-popper, with very smooth technique, a solid, whimsical soling sensibility that Phil envies, and a nice, meaty-with-edge tone. So, Phil believes you are more than capable of talking. :thu:

Cheers!

Actually I think "we" is second person. My Journalism teach in HS was pretty strict on tense.

But like you said, "he" "she" "it" work as well.

My journalism teacher was pretty tense also.

I is first person singular.

We is first person plural.

You is second person singular.

You is second person plural.

He, she, it is third person singular.

They is third person plural.

En Francais:

Je 1st sing.

Nous 1st plural

Tu (vous is more formal) 2nd sing.

Vous 2nd plural

Il, elle, on 3rd sing

Ils, elles 3rd plural

And I suppose for the Southerners amongst us:

Y'all is second person singular.

All y'alls is second person plural.

Back to the bass, I want all y'alls to get down and get funky.

Thank you for the "y'all" and "all y'all" -- it transported me back to my days livin' in Charlotte NC.

In Italiano:

io 1st sing (io suono il mio basso)

noi 1st plur (noi suoniamo insieme in un complesso)

tu 2nd sing (tu suoni il tuo basso molto bene)

voi 2nd plur (voi suonate molto bene)

lui,lei 3rd sing (lui/lei suona il basso)

loro 3rd plur (loro suonano gli strumenti)

Some other useful vocab for your next tour in the Old Country:

basso -- bass

basso elettrico -- electric bass

complesso -- band, combo

strumento -- instrument

suonare -- to play (as in to play an instrument)

do-re-mi-fa-sol-la-ti-do -- C-D-E-F-G-A-B-C

re minore -- D minor

sol maggiore -- G major

tastiera -- fingerboard (or keyboard)

tasti -- frets

manico -- neck

corpo -- body

corde -- strings

frassino -- ash

ontano -- alder

acero -- maple

palissandro -- rosewood

forte, piano, fortissimo, pianissimo, ecc. -- you should know these already, dammit!

Frudua -- maker of beautiful frickin' basses!

BTW, it's nice in English not to deal w/ gendered vocab! It's pleasant also not to have noun declensions like Latin or German.

Ain't nuthin' like some verb conjugations and foreign languages though to fire up some bass talk on the board!

Peace.

(And again -- Benvenuto al forum, Pietro!)

Ah wow, so that's the origin of solfege. Learning something everyday. Thanks Willie

But what about chromatic symbols? like "ra" and "me"

Played in a band in Italy for a little while. First rehearsal I had to watch the keyboard player's hands a lot because they kept calling out changes and weren't using letters! Imagine that! I got my "do-re-mi's" together pretty damn quick.

Can't help you, though, w/ the "ra" and "me".

Anyway, I've gone further off topic than necessary.

Bienvenidos Pedro!!!

Phil is rather enjoying the ping-pong abstractness of this, his first topic. :D He wonders when he will be able to return to first person, his nose is getting cold.

Cheers!

-Which is better? This $300 bass, or this $275 bass?
