Mastervint
Since being a studnet and therefore very poor I was wondering if someone could guide me with and "DIY" skills or if cheap, if i can use a professional. Problem is I would love to own a fretless bass but 1. I cant afford it and 2. My bass i currently own is actually quite nice already. So i was wondering if it is possible to remove the frets somehow and if so how could i go about it. It is a 2pickup Peavey 4-string with integrated neck if anyone can help us i'd be very grateful. BenLoy
You only have one bass? DO NOT DEFRET IT!!! Buy a cheap fretless to learn on. Or buy a cheap fretted and pull out the frets. DO NOT do that to your main instrument...you WILL regret it.
saxofunk
Ditti Ben... do not hack your main instrument! Do a search on this site and you will find other threads and discussions, with some links to sites that tell you how. Relating to you situation, I once had the same urge, but the urge will pass in time and you will be grateful that your bass is still in tact. Maybe you can find a decent yard sale or pawn shop bass that you can defret and experiment with. One of my local P-shops always has a rack of "less than $100" instruments that are in dire need of "Frankenbass" surgery or some lighter fluid and a match. - Matt W. SteveC
I had th eurge to do this to a bass. I bought a cheap Mexi Jazz and did the conversion on that. It worked out quite well. That said, I would not do it to my only bass.

Tom Capasso
Like Ben said. If you decide to buy another fretted bass and want to hack at your old one, try The Mike Lull site - Featured Repair - it describes how the work is done. jreed
I would have to agree with the guys here, I had a POS peavey dyna bass, the truss rod broke, so, I figured what the hell, took out the frets, put in some wood putting and sanded it with fine paper for weeks, applied the tung oil, and I had a POS bass that now sounds like a crapy fretless! so, I guess my point is, unless your an expert, try it on a bass that wont miss, just in case it dosent turn out that well. jreed jreed00@dcemail.com

Phoney McRing Ring
mmmmm..Simpsons quote I've got to go with the rest on this. If you are looking to buy a cheap fretless Tanglewood do a version of the rebel bass. Its not bad and its fairly cheap.
