dohhhhh6
Yeah, in the bassist forums people are usually nice but I mean... this topic has been way overdone and everyone has heard of them, even if they've never ACTUALLY heard the music. jeremy c
Here's a good list I found with a quick search: somebody else\'s list of ten bass players I was trying to find a list of all the bass players who have played with Miles Davis. That would make a pretty nice list. And then there are all the bass players who have played with people who were in one of Miles' bands. That would include all the bassists in the bands of Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, John McLaughlin, John Scofield, Mike Stern, Wayne Shorter, Tony Williams, John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderly, etc., etc. That would make a pretty impressive list. To our original poster, go back and find out who all these people are and listen to them, rather than posting a few names which most of us around here know anyway. Take up my challenge and fill in the Miles Davis list. When listening to all the people who have played with Miles, you may find some not so common names such as Dominique DiPiazza with John McLaughlin, Paul Jackson with Herbie Hancock, Bunny Brunel with Herbie Hancock, Gary Grainger with John Scofield, Jeff Andrews with Mike Stern. All these guys are monsters and all have been big influences on me. Free download of my cd!.
Max Valentino
Miles? That is a very impressive list of bassists. If you include the stint with Charlie Parker and Dizzy (which featured bassists Leonard Gaskin, Curley Russell, Addison Farmer, Vic McMillan, Tommy Potter, and Bill Doggett) the , and this is incomplete list of Bassists in Miles employ would be: Al McKibbon; Curley Russell; Tommy Potter; Joe Shulman; Nelson Boyd; Gene Ramey; Billy Taylor; Percy Heath; Charles Mingus; John Hixon; Oscar Pettiford; Leonard Gaskin; Paul Chambers; Milt Hinton; Pierre Michelot; Sam Jones; Ron Carter; Dave Holland; Joe Zawinul's left hand; Harvey Brooks; Michael Henderson; T.M. Stevens; Felton Crews; Marcus Miller; Foley; Mike Patterson; Bennie Reitveld; Carles Benevent; geez..did I miss anyone? For what it is worth I am quite a Miles Davis afficiendo. The reason I became a musician (and the decision to do was made at age 7) was due to hearing Mr. Miles Dewey Davis III. Max ...it's not the arrow, it's the Indian. davich
Wow, what a list! I just surprised to see T.M. Stevens and Bennie Retfield there. Was not on my knowledge before.
Max Valentino
ok ok So I missed Daryl Jones! Out out Miles' bands.....those sidemen who became leaders in their own right....also employed some very significan bassists. a very incomplete listing, but showing some of the exceptional names would be: Cick Corea (Stanley Clarke, John Pattitucci;Jimmy Earl John McLaughlin: (Rick Laird, who was always underappreciated in Mahavishnu; Jonas Hellborg; Matt Garrison who, as a sidebar, is the son of Jimmy Garrison who was John Coltrane's bassist, and didn't Coltrane play with with Miles once or twice?); Kai Eckhardt Joe Zawinul: Jaco Pastorius, Victor Bailey; Matt Garrison (again); Gerald Veasley; Herbie Hancock: Matt Garrison (again) Bill Laswell (who did the extrordinary Miles re-mix "Panthalassa") Charnett Moffett; Christian McBride; Paul Jackson I am not sure it counts, but Mike Henderson played with Stevie Wonder prior to his stint with Miles, then went on to enjoy R&B/pop superstardom on his own as a solo artist. Of course Dave Holland and Ron Carter...and Marcus Miller all went on to incredible leader/producer/solo artist careers. Lemme see....Wayne Shorter has worked with some incredble bassist.from Stanley to Jaco to Sting Keith Jarrett has worked with Miroslav Vitrous, Eberhard Weber..... there's still Billy Cobham (who I think worked with Marcus Miller and Stanley Clarke) ...Bernie Maupin,Steve Grossman, Mike Stern, John Scofield, Larry Young, Jack DeJohnette, Tony Williams; Philly Joe Jones; Pete Cosey; Reggie Lucas; Cornell Dupree;Airto, M'tume; Sonny Sharrock, Sonny Fortune; Dave Liebman; Bill Evans (the sax guy...the piano playing Bill Evans did a little work with some guy named LaFaro..and some Ornette cat.which takes us down even a wider path.... ......Miles hired an extensive list of great musicians in his bands. As a result, almost all of them went on to lead on their own..and in turn brought to the forefront a wealth of important and innovative bass players. Max ...it's not the arrow, it's the Indian. jeremy c
Thanks for posting all those names, Max. Next time I see you, we'll have to hang for a while. We've obviously been listening to a lot of the same people over the years. I was hoping our original poster would be the one to do the homework. So far all he has posted are brief statements. Fortunately this thread is getting interesting. A list of bass players who have played with Joe Zawinul in Weather Report, Weather Update or the Zawinul Syndicate makes a pretty formidable list. davebrownbass
Wow, Jeremy. Right after Claypool. I think the concept here of "bassists used by famous guys" is pretty interesting. So I'll throw one out.... Who played bass with James Brown? "Let's raise the level of this conversation" -- Jeremy Cohen, in the Picasso Thread. Still spendin' that political capital far faster than I can earn it...stretched way out on a limb here and looking for a better interest rate.
