Preference in (2) 1x12" Brands?

LDV

Recommended Posts

The use of 1x12" cabinets appears to be gaining momentum, particularly given the flexibility of adding a 2nd 1x12. So, if you were going out to buy two 112's today, which ones would you buy?

Aguilar GS112

Epifani T112

Bergantino HT 112

Others?

You're right - the 12 is gaining in popularity. There are many more manufacturers that make quality cabs than what's in your list.

Bass Player did a shootout over a year ago. More have come on the market since.

I'm a Berg man myself (I even have a tshirt  ). My moderator-brother Wally is having fun with an Accugroove 12. We have some Epifani users as well.

Use your ears first. Then remember that cabs sometimes cost more because they have better components in them....

I will certainly use my ears. Tom - what's the easiest way to get my hands on a copy of that Bass Player shootout?

Sadly, they didn't post their articles on the web for a while, so it's not available on-line.

You could order a reprint. Email/PM me and I'll get you the date when it ran (I'll dig in my BP archives this weekend to find it).

As Tom stated, my preference is the Accugroove Tri-112. There's just something in that sound that I don't get with 10's. I'll be doing a 12 day road trip with the Fleetwood Mac Tribute band Rumours starting next weekend and I'll be taking just that one cabinet and know that it will cut it.

I don't know why I don't really think about the AccuG Tri-112 as a 12" cab. It seems like a different beast altogether (which maybe is AG's goal?) There's a 1x12" and a 1x6" (I think) and then one or two tweeters, right?

Anyway, I'm hoping to try one soon -- I'm dying to!

the only 112 i've played is the bergantino HT-112, in reno, NV last october. reno was a cool town, but i digress.

the incredible focus and clarity of the bergantino really blew me away. i was curious about twelves, and was looking to lighten my rig from the carvin 115 + tweeter i have right now. (that cab is pretty decent, but the amp attached to it is not my favorite right now.) the bergantino had big tone, and a really surprisingly noticeable focus. i can't use any other word to describe the sound. it was just tight, but not in a bass tightness sort of way. and it was very articulate.

i'm looking forward to going to make 'n music in chicago in about a month. they're both a bergantino and an aguilar dealer. i will be able to try both side by side. i may end up buying one. i suspect i'll like the bergantino a lot more, though it's quite a bit more expensive.

i have heard only great things about the epifani T-112. i'm assuming it's also very nice.

Maken Music might also have the EA 1x12 and the Epifani 1x12. It's a terrific shop. Definitely call ahead, though, to find out what's in stock.

PM me about your travel plans and I might be able to meet you there, robb. Depending on your length of stay, you could also try getting to see Dan Lenard at the Luthiers Access Group , just outside of Chicago. He would possibly have an Epi 1x12 and an AccuGroove Tri-112 cab on hand. I haven't been to visit him yet, but I'm chomping on the bit to get there. (Plus he always has some truly wicked basses in stock...)

I've played an Epi 2x12 (older version w/ the drivers horizontal). It kicked ass. I'm currently attracted to the UltraLight 3x10, but all of this is too much $$$ for my blood.

But now I've digressed from the original topic.

Peace.

I'm, hoping to try the Epi Ultralight 310 very soon as well...my local Epi dealer is expecting one in. In the end, I will buy either Epi UL 3x10 or two 1x12's (brand tbd). It's really tough to find someone with enough inventory to make a choice.

I have a pair of the Aguilar GS112s and I certainly have no complaints about the quality of construction or weight (only 42 lbs). Tone-wise, my only concern is that I don't quite get that tight midrange punch my old SWR Goliath III had: they tend to be a bit more deep and boomy. In fairness to the Aguilars though, that could be, and likely is, the result of my own lack of EQ adjustment skills.

Regarding the Bass Player review of 12" cabinets, the Aguilars actually won but only by a smidge. Ironically, I'd bought mine about a month before this review even came out so it was nice to see them getting some praise.

Good luck.

I think the Genz Benz LS112T is a definite under dog. Hard to argue with the cost to performance ratio with them. Great cab.

It is from Blues that all that may be called American music derives it's most distinctive characteristics.

I (still) have a pair each of Epifani T-112s and Bergantino HT-112 plus EX-112. I use the Bergantinos most of the time because they are just enough smaller than the Epifanis that I can carry them easily with one hand. When I just need one cab, I usually go with an Epifani, they have a little more poot down low. Can't lose with either of these brands. Bring lots of power (I use a Stewart 1.2).

How does the EX-112 sound on its own? What's the HF extension like? The reason I'm asking is that I'm wondering about getting a little cab to either use on its own for small gigs, or with one or two Acme Low-B2 cabs to add some extra midrange punch, and I'm trying to go as small, light, punchy and cheap as possible (the impossible combination, but at least I didn't say deep as well).

Cheers,

I used my EX112 on its own for a few weeks. It sounds pretty good - after all, it's the same cab as the HT112 minus tweeter and crossover. But the HT112 definitely sounds smoother in the upper midrange and highs. The EX112 sounds just a bit "buzzy" in comparison. In my case, I had the HT112 just sitting there while I was using the EX112, and since the HT112 sounded better, I went back to using it.
