Hey this is my first post here so if I mess it up Im sorry, anyhow.

Ive got a Fender Precision bass and whenever I play the G chord on the fifth fret I get just a rattle and no other sound, this dosnt happen with any of the other chords or frets.I was wondering what yalls thoughts were on what could be causing this? Maybe a dead spot on the string?

What are ya doin' playin' chords ???? :)

'Dead spots' can/do occur ( not in any basses I play... ;) ) ......not usually at 5th fret though.....

...and you say when you fret a 'G' on your D string the note is completely silent ??

When you say a G chord at the fifth fret, do you mean a G5 chord (G-D)?

In any case, I'll venture that if your bass is rattling, that means your bass needs to be set up. Any decent guitar store should have a guy that does setups.

That is not a dead spot. A dead spot is an area that plays, but is not as loud and punchy as the notes around it. It is generally caused by a sympathetic vibration robbing power from the note...typically at the headstock.

What you got is a really bad fret problem. Get it to a shop.

It will either be....action too low, fret too high, truss rod too tight, neck twisted, or something else I can't think of right now.

I agree that you might have some bad fret problem over there. Or a bad setup.

If it is a dead spot, it is too dead for me. Usually dead spot have no sustain, but have some tone/sound.
