Gear selection in LA (or points south)?

LDV

Recommended Posts

I live in San Diego and I'm anxious to try out new bass cabinets with my own bass and amp. It's hard to find a decent selection of 1x12, 2x10, 3x10 etc., from Epifani, Aguilar, EA, Accugroove, etc. There's one nice high end shop in town but their selection is sparse. Any recommendations for good stores with good selection in the Los Angeles or Orange County area (the farther south, the bettter). Thanks.

Have you been to Bass Alone in San Diego?

Their website claims that they carry gear from EA, Aguilar, Bag End, Bergantino, and other fine cab makers.

I don't know how much they actively keep in stock, though.

Peace.

Yes, I have been there and would love to do business, but John's selection is not very good. He usually has a couple of Epi's and one Berg and a Tech. I also like his selection of basses, but I need to focus on the speaker cab first.

That's tough. It's too bad that his speaker cab inventory isn't more robust.

Come out to Chicago and I'll get you to the right stores! :D;):thu:

Can't help you, though, w/ LA... :(

BTW, until some of the LA folks get to this thread, you could check the dealer listings on the websites for those products, and crosscheck to see if any dealer carries multiple lines of interest to you. Then check dealer websites or get on the phone to see what's in stock. More legwork for you, but maybe it'll be fun until you hear more on this thread.

Peace.

You are a font of valuable information, Jeremy, and you've spared our friend the bother of stopping in LA! He could hop a plane to Chicago and be here in 4-5 hours, and not be in charge of driving, and visit Maken Music or the Luthiers Access Group. ;)

I've flown 3000 miles to go to Gelb Music.

The whole time I was there, my parents and high school friends were under the impression I was actually there to visit them!

Fools... :D

I'll be flying 2000 miles to visit Gelb Music this summer... ;)

Can't someone help poor LDV out? We're starting to take this thread away from the original question...where does a bass player go in LA when he wants to shop for higher end cabs?

Peace.

Well ... this is where I went to drool, when I lived in L.A., 1991-1997:

LA Bass Exchange

(I couldn't afford anything there, but they have some kick-ass instruments and gear).

This is where I actually bought stuff:

West L.A. Music

I can't find a link for Nadine's, where I went for setups and tech work ... maybe it's out of business.

Nadines shut down a few years ago. The rumor I heard was that they wern't doin the tax thang square and fair...

I used to like that place because it was the only place you could go into with being bothered by some idiot with loud music blasting. It's still painted the same on the outside. I heard that they had to remain shut down for a period (5-10 years?) before they would be allowed to reopen. I could be completely wrong on this ....

Man, I remember the first time I walked into Makin Music. the WALL OF ALEMBIC!!!!! Do they still have that? It was the coolest thing ever! I couldn't make up my mind about which kind of bass to get but I eventually bought one of the very first steinberger 5-strings ever produced. It eventually got stolen while on tour in the Phillippines. If I can remember correctly the serial number was #1027(1048?) Anybody seen her?

Here are a couple of options:

Mike Manson will be playing bass this Saturday, the 24, at the San Diego Jazz Fest with George Duke. I brought this up because he'll be using 2 El Whappo cabinets if you want to hear them.

If you make it up to San Jose, I'll make sure you can play all the AccuGroove cabs you want.
