ibescotty
Band update!! Well the band I'm in is playing it's first gig this weekend. It's in the middle of nowhere though. Waterloo Illinois!! Yikes!! We're supposedly trying out for a booking agency. If they like us we'll get played all over. I'm nervous. I'm gonna have a music stand on stage... is that bad? I really hope it goes well!! Tom Capasso
music stand - tough question. What type of image and energy do you need to project? It says "vocals" on the website - are you doing "oohs" or singing leads? I always have a music stand next to me, but not in front where I could read from it. I used it to check lyrics between songs, and keep the setlist on it. I found out early on that I can't sing or play from it and project the right energy. Of course, it took a lot of work to learn the music well enough to leave it on the side.... I'd try to use it on a "glance over" basis if possible. Good luck with the gig Tom www.stoneflyrocks.com Acoustic Color Be practical as well as generous in your ideals. The Bear Jew
Not to be a jerk or anything, but... Having a music stand onstage is seriously lame. Just my opinion. I have no idea what kind of music you're playing, but if you're doing any kind of non-jazz, non-classical, non-orchestral music or anything that requires you be in a standing position for performance, a music stand will really make you look kind of corny when you're playing in front of people. I'd recommend doing anything possible to avoid using one. Again, just my opinion. \m/ Erik "To fight and conquer in all your battles is not supreme excellence; supreme excellence consists of breaking the enemy's resistance without fighting." --Sun Tzu
ibescotty
That's the idea with the music stand. I sing leads on some of the covers. I'll probably have to glance over to keep the verses straight in my head. Other then that it's really there to help me out with some of the changes we have with the originals. I like to have some referance. There is a song or 2 that we just picked up and I'm gonna have to lean hard on the music stand. I know that's a bad thing. It's a last minute show though. Heck their trying to make me sing Let it be with only a weeks notice. I might shelf that one though. I'm just not comfortable with it yet. ibescotty
Yeah it's certainly not going to be obvious. It will be low and out of the way. It is a rock show of a sort though. I'll have to cram all I can to get the thing off the stage. Don't worry CDMN. I grew up in Philly. I can take it. I appreciate the input. What doesn't kill us makes us stronger. _Sweet Willie_
How badly do you need to do the tunes that you've just picked up that you most need the stand for? Are they really tight enough for performance? My rec would be to lose the brand new tunes. I would also cram like a mutha to get the other stuff down so you can downplay the stand as much as possible. If ya' really gotta have it, your plan to have it off to the side is a good one. You can even credit the practice to the famous NY rockers known as Sashi Tewari (did I get that right, Tom?). Then again, y'all could always invest in some teleprompters! The Bear Jew
Ah yeah... Philly boys can take anything... look at the roads we drive, the water we drink and food we eat! If you can handle 76 West at rush hour, Schuylkill River punch and a cheese-steak, you can take my abuse. So... Is there any way you can perhaps write the info you need really BIG on some pages and tape them onto the floor monitor in front of you (assuming you'll have one)? Or maybe on the back of your hand, like a crib sheet from ol' school days? Not that I'd know what one of those are... Distill the info to just focus on the things you always forget. Put that stuff on the pages in huge letters... The main thing to avoid is having that piece of furniture (music stand) onstage with you. IMO, it just makes you look kind of unprepared, and it definitely doesn't rock. \m/ Erik "To fight and conquer in all your battles is not supreme excellence; supreme excellence consists of breaking the enemy's resistance without fighting." --Sun Tzu
ibescotty
That makes sense. In fact that's what most of my sheets are anyways. The bridge written out with nothing else on the page cause I know the rest of the song. I'll glance at it to refresh myself on what's coming up and not really look again. I'm still new to this band and getting better every day. After driving over the Walt Whitman every morning I can take anything... ....and someone tell me why you always have to pay to leave Jersey but you don't have to pay to get in... ibescotty
It's late and the show is over but I had to come post. We had a great time in a little Southern Illinoise dive. We got rave reviews. I had a fan who said I was an "awesome bass player dude". Hey at least he didn't ask for free bird. Though he kept asking for Chili Peppers. It was nice to get the feed back though. All the work we've put into this project just paid off a little bit!!! Yeah for me. I'm excited. The CD's out. I'll have to post some samples one of these days if anyone's interested.
