Wow, this is a really great, though challenging, question. However, after a great deal of resarch - approximately equal to the effort you've exhibited by this incredibly insightful and probing question - I have an answer for you:

Unfortunately, no, there are no funk, punk, metal or otherwise songs with really great basslines.

I'm a big fan of Operation Ivy for some fun punk/ska. My first by them was "Room Without A Window." Gets the fingers workin'

As I was going up the stairs

I met a man who wasn't there

He wasn't there again today

I wish, I wish he'd go away

nativity in black - black sabbath

hammer smashed face - cannibal corpse

take the power back - rage against the machine

by the way - chilli peppers

every day - sick puppies

beer - reel big fish

bass solos aren't ridiculously common in the rock/metal/punk scene, but good basslines are. just about any song that's catchy, or sounds musically tallented, will have an awesome bass line. but you gotta decide on your favourite basslines and solos for yourself. everyone else's opinion should be irrelevant, but they're still worth checking out.

Go back. Go way, way back. Back to a fat-ass Rickenbacker plugged into a slightly distorted Marshall bass amp, and played with a pick. Go back to an album that many call one of the first heavy metal albums. The group is Deep Purple. The album, "Machine Head." The player, Roger Glover. The song, "Pictures Of Home." Eight bars of romping, stomping bass BALLS.

"I had to have something, and it wasn't there. I couldn't go down the street and buy it, so I built it."

Just about every Black Sabbath song is essentially a Geezer Butler bass solo.

Get a copy of Cynic's "Focus" album. It's a great album from a shortlived band that became famous in underground metal circles for their demos. You can get the demos in MP3 format here .

Sean Malone's the bassist here (on the "Focus" album, not the demos). The reason I'm pointing Tony Lim to this guy is that not only is he a great soloist, but a fine composer and teacher as well. His work spans several genres of music, and he's authored several music instruction books, including an in depth analysis on Jaco Pastorius' style.

Sean's Gordian Knot recently released an album, and I think he's finally getting around to doing the definitive Cynic DVD, which chronicles the band's output. He's also working on his Ph.D.

Uh, I realize that I am new to the message board and all, and I don't mean to be disrespectful, but I can't believe how wrong most of you are.

Let's see...

RHCP - just about everything of BloodSugarSexMagik

Tower of Power - Soul With A Capital 'S', What is Hip?, Diggin' on James Brown

Joe Zawinal - "Boogie Woogie Waltz"

... just to name a few.

I am in school, so I can't name more, jeez.

How exactly were people wrong by offering examples of what the poster asked for? I didn't see anyone specifically say "Oh and by the way, everything from RHCP sucks, definitely don't listen to that." Do you mean to say that the examples offered up aren't songs with bass solos? Quite frankly, you've left me looking a bit like this:

I interpreted the title of the thread "METAL SONGS WITH BASS SOLOS" as meaning he wanted a METAL song with a SOLO on the BASS. So i think my suggestion suited the question asked. :)
Derek Smalls: It's like fire and ice, basically. I feel my role in the band is to be somewhere in the middle of that, kind of like lukewarm water. http://www.myspace.com/gordonbache

I don't know how you folks have been able to function thus far without '5217. We should thank our lucky stars that he's finally arrived to set us all straight.

I mostly like punk and metal but I want to be more well rounded. I will probably play all the metal or punk song you suggest. Also, black sabbath did not have any songs that I know of that had bass solos. They had similar lines to guitar riffs but not real bass solos.

i said it once, and i'll say it again. NATIVITY IN BLACK [also called NIB] by black sabbath has a big bass solo at the start, a bass solo towards the end, under a guitar solo, and an amazing bass line throughout. also check out the cover of it by primus with ozzy for some even more stunning bass solo work on the song. and don't ever try and put down black sabbath, or geezer. or i will slaughter you. :freak:

If you are refering to Billy Sheehan's first band, :thu: it's spelled "Talas". Not trying to be anal, but if you try to do a search it'll make a difference.

Nothing is as it seems but everything is exactly what it is - B. Banzai
