Hey zujo, how are you? How's the band doing - any political overthrows?

I've played lots of well-made basses with various woods. I find it's a smaller part of the equation than the electronics, though I do find a big diff with a maple fingerboard....

Bumpcity - booya? You been hanging with CMDN?

Different woods give different sounds i.e mahogany = plenty of sustain. I've read about people changing the nut of their guitars from plastic to brass, bone, ivory (surely that's illegal!) graphite etc. Has any one tried this, is there a big difference? Surely manufacture's wouldn't spend so much time and money on a great guitar if a plastic nut was going to wreck the tone.

As for woods, definitely check out Bump's links above. Most useful. As for nut materials...

Looking at the latest Stew Mac catalog, I see nut and saddle material in graphite, bone, "antique bone" (unbleached), Micarta-a synthetic bone substitute, mother of pearl, Delrin (Slip Stone), and bonded polymer (Tusq). The Delrin and Graphite are described as self lubricating. The catalog quotes Roger Sadowsky endorsing the Slip Stone product.

Most currently sold ivory, as I understand it, must be certified as a castoff due to natural molting, death, or breakage: or to be antique, that is originally produced for sale before a certain date. I am not sure, but I think it was 1986.

Oh, and the bone is usually from cows.

Back in my "Geddy is God" days, I replaced the nut on my Rick 4001 with a brass model, and changed the bridge to a BadAss. It definitely changed the tone, added a lot of brightness, and some interesting mid tones. But I was not pleased with the change, so I sold that bass and went fretless.

Now, that's another story...

Hope this helps.

Peace,

Cheers Wraub, Ivory and bone sounds a bit macabre to me, I wouldn't want to keep on thinking of death everytime I looked up at my head. The good thing about plastics is everyone knows accrylics have no feelings ;)

However, the TuskBuffer guy makes ivory picks out of mammoth ivory. Hate to think of that mammoth suffering and dying, like, about 15,000 years ago or more... :D:D:D

Don't see why a mammoth ivory nut wouldn't be feasible. I could just see the sign "For sale: Mammoth nuts"...

HAHAHAHA...
