Wally Malone
I was in my car listening to the Bay Area jazz station KCSM and heard this tune where the bass was doing this smokin' walking line and was way up in the mix. The tune was Bye Bye Blackbird. So then the bass player breaks into a solo and I was hooked even more. I was aware that the cut was a live situation. I got to my destination and sat and listened until the tune was finished. Well it went straight into another tune and didn't announce the source of the tune. I didn't have time to sit and wait not knowing how many more tunes they would play before telling what they had played. When I got home that night I called the station who has a research department and left a message that I had heard a live cut of Bye Bye Blackbird somewhere between 5:30 and 6 p.m. and wanted to know who it was. They got back to me and said it was on the Roy Eldrige release Montreaux 77. Looked it up on CD Now and found out it was Niels-Henning Orsted Pederson on bass. I don't have any Pederson in my collection but will get this one soon. Also when I was at CD Now I noticed one of Pederson's releases with Sam Jones called DoubleBass which should be interesting. Has anyone here listened to either of these or are there any others that Pederson plays on that you might recommend? Wally I have basses to play, places to be and good music to make! Wally Malone
Adrian, Haven't found the Montreaux 77 CD in the local stores, might have to get it online. However, when I went into Rasputin Music last night looking for it I walked out with Chops a duo NHOP did with Joe Pass. Incredible, definitely will become one of my most listened to CD's. Chops is a good name for the release, they've both got them. Wally I have basses to play, places to be and good music to make!
