Ed Friedland
I deleted the previous topic about Mr Smalls in an attempt to keep the language content and attitude here family oriented. I'm not opposed to saying something "sucks" but a topic heading like that is asking for the typical usenet B.S. to start flourishing. If you would like to continue a rant on Mr. Smalls feel free to do it here. But if you must dis him, remember, he's the voice behind Ned Flanders! Rick Turner
Oh, come on now. Derek Smalls, aka Harry Shearer, rocks! I saw 'Tap live last year at Santa Monica Civic, and they were awesome, dude! He's also got an incredibly funny show on KCRW. Great sketches, plays great music. A wonderful talent.
BenLoy
My apologies...I posted it as a humorous reply to the "Jaco" post and thought it would get some laughs...but when I think about I guess you know as well as I that there are many MANY people on discussion and news groups that have no senses of humor and look for topics to flame all the time... Way to moderate, Ed! http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/smile.gif

Ed Friedland
Rick, Don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan of Derek Smalls, I think he's the classic "deep thinker" that all bassists try to emulate! I was merely heading off a potential "Potty-thread". BenLoy
Ed, did you see VH1's "Behind the Music" on Spinal Tap? There's a great bit in the "where are they now?" section where Derek is finally seen working with children...teaching them to paint in kindergarden...except he only displays HIS artwork on the walls because, in his words (plummy accent), "...really, wot the kids paint is crap." http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
Ed Friedland
No, I missed that, sounds hilarious. I need to get a DVD player just so I can watch Tap on DVD, I hear it's brilliant. I was really surprised to hear that Derek (Harry Shearer) is the voice of Ned Flanders. Wow, talk about artistic range! ------------------ www.edfriedland.com www.edfriedland.com The Bass Whisperer Bass Whisperer TV
BenLoy
Actually he's Ned Flanders, Kent Brockman, Reverend Lovejoy, Mr. Burns AND Smithers http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/eek.gif, Lenny, and so many others...between him and Hank Azaria I think they have about 25 different characters down. Kinda scary. The Spinal Tap DVD is great...it's worth the price for the intro menu dialogue alone.
Ed Friedland
WOW!! That settles it, I'm going to transcribe ALL of Derek Small's basslines and do a "Jamerson" type tribute book on him! ------------------ www.edfriedland.com www.edfriedland.com The Bass Whisperer Bass Whisperer TV
BenLoy
Yes! I've been waiting for a transcription of the PROPER way to play the "Jazz Odyssey"!. http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
dansouth
Harry Shearer, known to Wayne's World fans as legendary DJ Handsome Dan. I'll assume that Mr. Shearer did NOT play on the soundtrack. Anyone know who did?

I think they were sequenced using experiemental propriatary software written by NASA engineers on CRAY supercomputers. Or maybe Harry did play them, not sure. http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/wink.gif Ed, love the transcription idea. You need to get some celeb players to play on the tribute companion cd. I'll call Marcus Miller and tell him to clear his schedule. -David R. -David R.
KHAN
I think anyone who doesn't like Derek Smalls doesn't understand the difficult situation he was in. David and Nigel are poets (See: Lick My Love Pump"). They are like Fire and Ice. Mr. Smalls unenviable task is to fit in the middle, in his words "like luke warm water". Also, with the plethora of drummers the band has had over the years it must be a difficult task to hold down that "Big Bottom"!!! http://cwm.ragesofsanity.com/contrib/blackeye/hippy.gif So Many Drummers. So Little Time...
xtian_dup1
I wanna see "Gimme Some Money" covered by Jack Cassady. And "Big Bottom" done by Victor Wooten (all 3 parts at once...maybe he can get some help from FutureMan). And "Hell Hole" done by Lemmy. And "Rock and Roll Creation" done by King Crimson with Tony Levin. OK. Back to work. - Christian Budapest, Hungary
Mr. Wise Man
Originally posted by dansouth@yahoo.com: I'll assume that Mr. Shearer did NOT play on the soundtrack. Anyone know who did? And what happens when you assume? Harry Shearer played his own bass parts on the soundtrack and on the other Spinal Tap recordings. And Michael McKean and Christopher Guest really did play guitar (and bass, of course, on "Big Bottom").
