Eeegad! Whata meesa saying!?!? Speaking of Episode 1, I just picked up the DVD this week and checked out the rather cool 'making of' footage. I love the fact that it's not narrated, and that they left it pretty raw. Boy, that Rick McCallum guy sure has a fucking foul mouth! Fuck! It was a real eye-opener into all of the things that go into making one of these movies. That bit where they come to the set in the morning and find four months of work half destroyed from the storm the night before -and then having to struggle with time tables and production costs. All very interesting. But what really struck me were the scenes where they Lucas is watching the mostly completed film and trying to decide if he made the right decisions about this or that, and maybe he went too far in a given area. It's interesting to see him critique his own work. I guess the impression I tend to get is that he has this complete control over his project, but in reality he's really just hedging bets. I mean, considering all of the talent, and resources at his disposal, when all is said and done, he still sees the finished product and wonders if he the movie works or not. It makes me a little less critical of his work, and more apprieciative of his boldness to try new things with SO MUCH hanging in the balance. Literally, he could have relied on formula -that's all anyone expected from the new Star Wars, was that it felt like the old Star Wars. You gotta like a guy with the balls to take the risk and NOT give the fans what they wanted. Regardless of how I feel about the movie, I LOVE the attitude. Can't wait to see what he has in store for us next! :thu:
Originally posted by rog951: Well, like it or not, looks like I'm going on opening night. My fiance is a bona-fide Star Wars NUT and she just emailed me that she'd bought our tickets online today. Of course, it has to be the Uptown Theatre (our only local monster-screen here in the DC area) which means we'll be in line for hours beforehand.
Rog, Saw it in the Uptown on yesterday 3:30 pm showing. I got there at 2 pm and there was a long line already. The sad part is, there was already a line for the 7 pm show (probably yours) that was almost as long. Without giving any details away, I think what was really good about the original trilogy is I cared for the main characters. It was basically a "friends" movie - they just happen to be saving the universe. On Ep. I and, unfortunately, Ep II, I didn't connect with the main characters. It seemed to me that there wasn't enough human element. The CG was great, of course, but I was looking for a good movie. I think it's like hearing a virtuostic guitar player in the context of a mediocre song. The playing will be impressive for a while but without a good song, it's not that satisfying. Also, I didn't feel Ep. II covered enough of the story line - meaning that Ep. III needs to cover a lot of story to tie it in with the original trilogy. I think part of the challenge of this prequel is we all know how it (the whole sequel) ends. I mean, during Ep. I and II (and III), you know Obi Wan, Anikan, Yoda, etc., ain't dying. Know what I mean? So no matter what danger they get into, you know they survive. Takes some suspense out of the which I think is part of a good movie. Walking out of the theatre, I remember thinking I liked EpII better than EpI. Recently, though, I like EpI better than EpII. Neither is better than any of the original trilogy (because of my lack of connection with the characters I said previously so don't flame me for not saying why :) ). Will I see EpIII? Yup. Gotta see how it all ties in together. Ya know?

Well in my mind AOTC clones more than makes up for the insipid banality that was TPM. The characters are developed more, the action is intense, battles are better, the corny one liners are cornier (C3PO anyone?) and JarJar hardly appears at all THANK GOD. The love story isn't too sickening either... The cuts to and from it are a bit quick but I understand it needed to be done to keep the film time down. Great fight scences... Not going to mention any particular scenes.. just think of the end bit.... and then there's the....... Well you know where they go to find Obi? My god.. they're like diamonds baby....LOL Anyway... I was on a real high after it.. So I'm going back again during the week....

i watched number 1 the other night and i really dont find jar jar as offensive as everyone else seems to. nor did i really find it that bad in comparison to the original 3. i cant wait to see 2. i have no expectations [which i think is why most are "let down" and just going to go enjoy it for what it is] uptown theater is CRAZY on opening nights. the best burgers in the world [and guiness on tap] is right across the street at Nanny O'Briens.

Well, I saw Episode II on Thursday night. MAN! I LOVED IT!!! It was awesome... The CG was beautifull, the story was VERY good (fitted into the saga MUCH better than Episode I), and the movie had a very dark feel to it. You see the beginning of the empire. In my opinion, Lucas has once again showed us that he is VERY good at storytelling. Yoda shows us why he is the Jedi Master... GREAT! Anakin shows that he is darkening... This movie is just as good as the first three. I think some people want the new episodes to be just like the first three. Why would you want that? Don't get me wrong, the first three were excellent movies, I'm a BIG fan... I just think it'd be wrong to make a modern movie that looks and feels like it was made 20 years ago. Lucas loves this new technology because it lets him make all his visions come to life. I love the fact that he embraces this new technology. It results in movies with stories and scenes that we've never seen on the screen before. Keep at it George! I'm gonna be rushing back to the movies to watch Episode II every chance I get!

I saw Star Wars Episode II, yesterday. I hate to say it, but I was very disappointed. Granted it was better than EP I, but that's not really saying much. Problems I had with the movie. No character development-like riffing said I need to care about these characters and I didn't. Anakin, in particular, is the most important character in the film. He should be a tragic hero, not a partially manipulative, arrogant, sneaky kind of character with a lot of power. He should have a heart of gold, but with a tragic flaw, be it anger or slight arrogance or ambition. If we love or atleast like one character in the film it should be Ani, on this Lucas did not deliver. His entire direction with this character, IMO, was off. No tight story line with central themes-the story seemed to be thrown around quite a bit. The story was not focused, and no essential theme was supported, which by the way made the first three so special. Also, what ever happened to rising action to a climax. There were a number of scenes that could have been built up to be way more dramatic, but instead they were just thrown in.(I'm being vague for those who have not yet scene the movie). And I agree with Riffing again, one of the biggest challenges with the Prequels is that you don't have fatal excitement with most of the main characters. We know Obi, Ani, Amidala, and Yoda are going to live, so therefore, you have to find other ways to get the crowd involved. Mortal danger won't work, so you put a lot more time in character relationships. Acting-besides Obi Wan Kenobi-(he really carried the movie for me), everyone else pretty much sucked. I find this to be a directoral problem. Anytime you have three or more actors sucking for the entire movie it reflects on the direction and not the individual actors. Good things about the movie. It's probably the best "looking" film in the entire galaxy. Great crowd-pleasing gimmicks. Not to give anything away, but the last fight scene rocks for various reasons. Jango and Bobba Fett were perfectly casted and fit into the movie nicely. The "Cloning" aspect of the storyline was actually good. All in all, EP II is great for entertainment maybe, but if that that's it. Which is significantly different from the previous trilogy. There are a million movies that are entertaining. The first trilogy was entertaining. But what made the first trilogy so special? One of its indearing qualities was underneath the entertainment, there was wonderful spiritual insights and qualities inherent in the film if you wanted it. This is what is absent from Prequels. The spiritual underpinnings of the story are not present. EP II appeared to me to be a showcase of digital effects with some bad dialogue thrown in to break it up. Jedi Sorry to go so long, but obvious from my post name, I love Star Wars. So I'm little more into it than most.

I'd just like to add that I can't understand the ones who say that the film is plagued by bad acting. I think Anakin did a GREAT job. You see that he is getting more powerfull, that he is trying to cope with his strong feelings(he's a pationate person) and that he's slowly being lured into being very sure of himself, which is where the arrogance comes in. I think he got the whole "struggle within" thing right. I don't see the fact that we know certain things in advance as a problem. It just makes the excitement lie in "how do they get out of this one?!" instead of "Oh no! I hope he/she makes it!". Well, out of time, gotta go... GO SEE THE MOVIE! Judge for yourselves...

First, regarding charactor development: There was AT LEAST as much character development in this film as there ever was in the original series - you need to watch them again. If you want more development than that, go watch Star Trek. I felt Anakin embodied all of the traits you were complaining about. He IS the tragic hero. He is straining at his masters leash. And, obviously, he has a very independent mind. He's a good person with a tortured soul. That certainly sounds like the fallen hero that becomes Darth Vader. Your final comment about the movie being a special effects showcase with bad dialog thrown in to break it up, was completely off base! This movie sits comfortably in with the original saga, and softens the mild disappointment that the EP1 turned out to be. Seriously though. Did you actually watch the movie, or did you just sit in with a scratch pad and jot down your critique.

So I saw Episode II this afternoon. Although not as grand as "Good Burger" or "Dude Where's My Car?" it still gets a thumbs up in my book.....think "Valley Girl" with lightsabres.
