I don't have a DAW or anything like that, but I hear a lot about dithering and such and I'm wondering what it is.

I think its....Ya know....What will make you go blind if you do it too much. Causes hairy palms, too.

I wrote an article about dither in the March 2002 Keyboard. Basically, dithering improves the sound of digital audio at very low levels when you're creating a lower resolution file from a higher resolution file (or program with high internal processing resolution). It's typically used as the very last stage in mastering. If after checking out the various references you have specific questions, ask them here and I'll try to help.
