Fulc
Pop music is afraid to be brilliant. Pop music is also afraid to suck. And who defines pop? We do. Re tomcat's idea of pirate stations: that would be the inter-not. Plenty of stations streaming the stuff that falls outside the standard deviation. We do. No we don't. Clear Channel and CBS/Infinity do. When I was a kid and was glued to the radio, bands tried to be different and sound different from each other. Each strove to have it's own distinctive sound. And one station would play it all... the Stones, Otis Redding, Hendrix, Santana, Blood Sweat and Tears, Judy Collins, the Cowsills, Miles Davis, Led Zepelin, The 1910 Fruit Gum Company, Pink Floyd, James Taylor, CSN, 10 CC, Steely Dan.... all on one station. Now, everyone wants to sound like someone who is already popular. You see it on the threads here, you hear it on the radio. It is hard to sell diversity to the radio stations. They have us all pigeonholed into advertising demographics. They don't give a damn about pleasing us, they want to sell ads, and concentrating the listeners into defined demographics allows them to focus the ads and therefore sell more and more expensive ads. http://www.prorec.com/prorec/articles.nsf/articles/9520A2ADBA5C0A3C8625695100253DFE http://www.prorec.com/prorec/articles.nsf/files/5AE62B160A57F29886256A7A0017F4AC Bill "I believe that entertainment can aspire to be art, and can become art, but if you set out to make art you're an idiot." DC Ross
I don't think many people have it in them to be truly innovative. Do I have it in me? I don't think so. Do you? Maybe, but doubtful. We're all influenced by those that came before us and by what's around us. Maybe with the exception of the Residents, everything I hear (in popular music) is reminiscent of something I've heard before, which is neither good nor bad, it just is. With that being said, there are those that will blatantly plagiarize other's songs/lyrics/riffs/whatever and be lucky enough to hit it big. (Ahem, stone temple pilots, Ahem) Maybe I'll step down off of this soapbox now before I get stoned to death It's not simple to be simple. -H.
