Recommended Posts

I wasn't sure what the status of the song thread was so i just went ahead with my own here.

Here are some unfunished or first draft tunes of mine for you guys to rip apart.

I'm not satisfied with any of them and am up for all suggestions on arranging, lyrics, chords, anything.

ALL comments are welcome.

I only have 3 megs of site space right now so i had to use very lo fi mp3's.

If anyone can suggest where i can get some free space on the net i would like to hear about it.

Please try to be constructive. if you don't like something try to explain why.

If you have ideas and don't want them posted here publicly, you can email me at jimholland@whtvcable.com.

Thanks alot.

Jh :)

Halljams,

Phat is Phat.

I only had a chance to take a quick listen. I really like that Phat. A lot going on there my friend.

Be My Girl is nice but I had a problem with too many be my's.???

No Next Time has a chance. Maybe rethink how or where you want it to go? Not sure...Initial thought. I like.

Me and You, I couldn't get to download. It linked to Be My Girl on the page.

I'll have a chance to re listen to these later in the week & will post you an email with my thoughts if they get too long or seem too stupid to me. :D

Free space is available at tripod(50)0mb), geocities(25mb), fortune city

(was100mb) and angelfire(25mb?), amongst others. For this kind of use, it'll work. You get stuck with banners or popups but the only thing it'll be for is to have a place to stash the music. You'll have to post the url to a page because they usually won't let pictures or sound files access from outside their servers. They want those ads seen. There's also www.portland.co.uk available. It's 15mb with no ads. They have a 100mb per month transfer allocation. I'm sure the others do too but I don't know what they are. I use tripod on a couple of sites with songs on them but they're low visibility so I haven't hit the limits.

Hey guys, thanks for listening.

Phat is new, about 2 weeks old.

I'm having fun with it. I'm glad it comes across in a fun way too, that's great :freak:

I like the pain!

I'll get some more space going tomorrow and put up some better quality mp3's and get "Me and you" and maby a couple others going.

Thanks again men.

Halljams, I'm still wantin' to hear Me And You...

I've been listending to the other tunes & still thing Phat is all that. I like the others too & want to hear a better quality version if you have one available. If so, email me at info@daklandermusic.net & I'll get back to you with my real addy. It's a bit tough, with my old ears, hearing the nuances with the lofi.

Your voice is perfect for that style of song so don't be so damned hard on yourself about it. I'm not that much into the style you're doing so it kinda slips my mind but your voice is remeniscent of one I've heard before. When I figure it out, I'll give a shout.

Man, I want to hear more of these. I think they're a great start & think you'll want to just tweak a bit, not much, & they'll be right there. :thu:

Say Jim,

I really like your tunes and I agree that your singing is just fine. They could maybe use a bit of polishing, my biggest gripe is that especially on Phat the vocal is too far back in the mix. Don't be afraid of your own voice, it's good!

I tried to email you a tune of ours and discussed your tunes a bit but it came back and said the file size was too large. I'm gonna try and figure out the mp3 hosting business and put up some tunes I guess. Found a great encoder at least.

Keep us posted,

PHAT http://halljams.tripod.com/page/Phat_partial_hifi.mp3

A piece that's almost finished by my new writing partner Brian Foulds and i. We have one other that we are almost finished in the same vein.

I'm anxious to hear what Ya'll think of this stuff. It hould be a little trip, you have to pay attention. That is our goal anyway.

Me And You.

This was written in the context of a play and it is supposed to be sung by 2 girls(8-13years). They take turns on the verses and sing the line at the end in harmony.

DDDOOOOHHHH!!!!!

Apparently they removed me from tripod because i violated their terms of service.

Why is everything with computers so frikkin hard?

I'll try something else i guess.

Dak your the expert, is there a trick to using this free hosting. Some places have a file size maximum of 250k but give you 50megs, how stupid is that?

I'm not adverse to buying some space but if i don't have to i don't wanna.

Boy!!! Talk about a pouty face :( Practice that look and if your songs don't lure them in, you'll have the babes pounding your door down asking if they can make it all better for you. Nice Eyes ;)

Which hosting company did you select? I hope not Interland; they bought my original host out and I was with them all of three weeks before I ditched them. I'm just now getting back in a comfort zone with my new server after transferring everything over. I started out with 1096 pages and over 56,000 links before I started chopping out frames pages. I advise anyone to stay away from Interland unless you enjoy meeting new tech support teams routinely. They're LAME!

My friend, no suggestions. I'm replying to this after seeing you have gone with a pay site. That's really the best way to go. My tripod site is still up but I don't have alot of traffic. Maybe that's the key. In any case, I'm looking forward to hearing better quality versions of some really good songs. In the meantime I'll send out a copy of the lo fi stuff if someone asks. :thu:

KEWL tune Halljams; I like "Phat" real well. I had to listen to it several times, over and over. It has a very nice groove to it; a good dance beat and an interesting story line. A couple places I couldn't make out the words, but I could guess the implication by those surrounding so it did not take away from the song. Don't even discredit your voice or singing as I've noticed you saying in previous posts; you have sex appeal with the laudy way you project your vocals. Good work, I await to hear more tunes. Thanks DAK, for forwarding the tune.... go ahead a send em' all. One at a time, but right in a row if you want. My e-mail should be fully transfered over to the new server now. :thu:

cause they seem to have it together and it's CHEAP!!

Hey Halljams,

I just visited the link to your-site.com; I hope they maintain your domain better than they do their homepage. When I visited their site, the appearance of the page looked nice until you went to scoll; once you scrolled down the page the writing streamlined the text by duplicating it down the page. When I tried to access some of the other pages that they referred to as clients, all pages showed up blank. At first guess, I would back off of them like hot fire; but without further investigation, there may be an incompatibility with my browser. I use Internet Explorer 6.0. and most reputable hosting servers try to assure browser compatibility with the majors... and IE is one of the big ones. All my other sites are coming up fine, so it's not an obvious browser problem.

I've listened to it several more times, and if I am correct, you used an autotuner in places which voids every negative thing I've said about them in earlier posts throughout the boards. If indeed you did use an autotuner, you did it with an artistic touch and made it sound like a really cool effect on your voice.

Well first off, thank you so much for your compliments and for listening.

I assume you are talking about Phat here.

The tune is obviously still in the beguinning stages and yes i did use auto-tune cause it was a little messy, but i liked the attitude better than other takes.

Each verse is a full take so i didn't cheat too much :D

But i do have trouble controlling my pitch as i don't and never have sang regularly and developed very good control, so i find that auto tune is really helpful for me.

I try to learn the vocal my best and then polish it up where it needs it.

Personally i really dislike hearing out of tune vocals so i try not to put anyone else thru it.

But i am really curious at which points of the tune you are hearing the auto tune.

I used an old tube preamp for the vocal which you will be able to hear clearer on the hifi version i will put up, and it did some neat things when i hit it hard.

I wonder if that is what you are hearing because i thought i did a champion job of hiding the autotuning. Maby i need to re-evalute my skill with the thing LOL

Thanks again.
