Standard Midi File

Recommended Posts

I need to send a Standard Midi File to a website which will use it for its home page. I recorded the sequence in Digital Performer. Then I checked to get the correct program change numbers for each instrument. I inserted the program change numbers at the start of the sequence, then saved the sequence as a Standard Midi File. I then opened Quicktime Player to test the sequence but the instrument assignments were wrong. Did I omit an important step?

Perhaps the problem is that some programs (and synths) number programs from 0-127, and others from 1-128. So if you specified program #34, it may play back as #33 or #35, depending on which program uses which protocol.

Thanks for your speedy reply, but I don't think that is the problem. One instrument is more than one number off. It's about 30 numbers off. There must be some part of the protocol that I've omitted or done incorrectly.

perhaps the file was not save in General Midi format? I've not used Digital Performer, but Cakewalk can get that result if the instruments are created in XG or other format and the file is save as Cakewalk (*.wrk) or something else. If the instruments are assigned in General Midi mode and the file save as General Midi, then my (admittedly limited) understanding is that most sound cards will play it fairly accurately.
