Salyphus Posted May 7, 2002 Posted May 7, 2002 I have to admit, as someone who was around in the early days, I have pretty much stopped visiting this board on a regular basis and now just 'check in' once in a while to see how things are going. It's not that I don't appreciate humor, or think that things always have to be stricly 'on-topic', but frankly, for me, the maturity level and tone of the lot of posts here these days are just not amusing to me and basically a waste of time (to me). Of course, it isn't my place to complain, especially since I was never a huge contributor in the first place, so I've just sort of stopped hanging out, but since this thread is here I figured I might as well share my point of view. Ideally I guess I would prefer to see an 'off-topic' area where people can post whatever they want. I mean, hell, there is a specific thread that is the ONLY place people can post about their own music, but someone who wants to ask what your favorite color of dogshit is can post wherever they want; that seems rather out of whack to me... Anyway, that's just my two cents, for whatever they are worth.
Anderton Posted May 7, 2002 Author Posted May 7, 2002 ==frankly, for me, the maturity level and tone of the lot of posts here these days are just not amusing to me and basically a waste of time (to me)== There are posts here that are as you describe; I think we pretty much agree on that. However, the question is what I should do about it. Do I delete all off-topic posts? Just the ones I find objectionable? Just the ones I find immature? And if I do, how much time should I spend on deleting -- which takes a long time on a dial-up connection? These are legitimate questions, but I don't have any easy answers. ==Of course, it isn't my place to complain, especially since I was never a huge contributor in the first place, so I've just sort of stopped hanging out, but since this thread is here I figured I might as well share my point of view.== All points of view are welcome...that's the whole point!! You're welcome to come here and say my writing is obtuse and my music sucks, that's okay too. <> Well, SSS is the "Open Mic" section of the board. If you look at the other forums, they are quite focused and specific. SSS has sort of defaulted to the place where anything goes, and I'm reluctant to change that because in addition to the dreck, there are some real gems in here. I already sense that things are turning back a bit toward a more serious bent, so I'm inclined to (again) just let things take their natural course. If not, I may get a little more heavy-handed with the delete button. But again, I feel that there aren't a lot of burning tech issues people want to discuss right now anyway. I realize that SSS is not everyone's cup of tea, but with the vast array of expertise available on all the forums here, hopefully everyone can find something that appeals to them. Rim Posted February 9, 2005 Posted February 9, 2005 NOTE: Resurrecting old thread Since the new bb software seems to support sticky threads, I was trying to find threads that would be good for that (or something to base a sticky thread on). I think a sticky "intro and guidelines" thread for SSS would be a good idea and this thread is a good candidate to base one on. aka riffing Double Post music: Strip Down http://rimspeed.com http://loadedtheband.com
Steve Force Posted February 9, 2005 Posted February 9, 2005 I really dig this place! :thu: A comfortable place to be indeed--thanks everybody (even you clowns I don't agree with!) I have learned SO MUCH here, and hopefully have been able to contribute back (in my own, albeit modest way). Moderators, Thank You for your efforts and wisdom. You are a very cool bunch of people. Rock on. Regards. Steve Force, Durham, North Carolina -------- My Professional Websites

theblue1 Posted February 9, 2005 Posted February 9, 2005 Craig I'm happy you've decided to come down on the side of a loose, free-flowing BB. Sure, goofiness can get as tiresome as over-seriousness, but the easy solution is to skip over what you don't want to bother with. I think it's well worthwhile to have a segregated political forum, that keeps the potential comity level here a lot higher. But one thing I've noticed is that too much compartmentalization can prevent the critical mass that a BB needs to survive and thrive. And it's the lively atmosphere and participation that helps make this forum as compelling as it is. bookmark these: news.google.com | m-w dictionary | wikipedia encyclopedia | Columbia Encyclopedia TK Major / one blue nine | myspace.com/onebluenine
Wewus432 Posted February 9, 2005 Posted February 9, 2005 dood, Craig posted that almost three years ago.
techristian Posted February 9, 2005 Posted February 9, 2005 I'm glad to see that this forum is back up ! I was having a few withdrawal symptoms. Sorry, that's true. The record companies are clueless, the internet music revolution is a bust, SMDI is DOA, companies are introducing fewer new technologies, and really, the whole computer/software thing is pretty mature right now. I don't know about you, but I've got all the gear I need to make good music. The above touched off a few thoughts in my head. After 20 years of "playing with" MIDI and recording, perhaps that is why I'm coming back to my roots bigtime (playing drums) after all of these years. Gradually the computer swallowed up more and more of my time and I eventually had my practice down to a mere trickle of (should I admit it?) ONCE EVERY 6 MONTHS . Now I'm back to the point of an average of 1-1.5 hours per day. Now here is also a funny thing that I learned the other day. My friend , in An Arbor, Scotty and his wife wanted me to record a song that he had on a back burner for over 10 years. It just happens that Scotty also accepts packages for me when the EBAY ad says "will ship to U.S. only" so I had my used Fostex VF16 sent to his house. Then I recorded their performance while I was over and told them that I would bring it home and finish it. HA HA HA. It was not as easy as I thought. Even though this was a simple COUNTRY BEAT (you can't get any simpler than that!), his wife put in these neat little RETARDS which messed me up. I sweat for over an hour to try and record this "from the top". Most of my drumming is good but I'll import the whole thing into my DAW and slice and dice up the drums a bit. Now I said all of that to make a simple point. If I had played drums , LIVE WHILE they played this, it could have been done without editing in only a few takes. What is the difference? The HUMAN ELEMENT. We feed back and forth and also use visual cues for when the vocalist wants to slow down. To try and PROGRAM THIS INTO A SEQUENCER or edit it just kills the whole thing ! If you are paying a studio to produce music this way it is just way too cost prohibitive. A quick little technical question. It seems that the Fostex PDIF sends out the MIX so I'll need to figure out how to separate my drums from the MIX. Maybe muting tracks and successive dumps? At the same time , I'm very impressed with what has happened in the COLLABORATION FORUM. The music being produced there is very good and proves that there may still yet be hope for technology ! Dan http://teachmedrums.com My friend also "hears" strings for his song. I'll have more fun with the tempo again. TEACHMEDRUMS.COM My Music Videos RED PILL
Wewus432 Posted February 9, 2005 Posted February 9, 2005 You know Dan you're very talented, but I hate that Christian Rock bullshit. Are you sure that's where you're coming from. I don't think so.
techristian Posted February 9, 2005 Posted February 9, 2005 Wewus I'm not quite sure of your point? Yes my friend's song is christian, and my drums alone are secular, but I was making more a statement about going back from my most modern musical instrument to my most primative musical instrument. Wewus432 Posted February 9, 2005 Posted February 9, 2005 I saw one of your videos Dan, linked from your site. It bummed me out. I couldn't relate to the message, but I thought the production was pretty fine.

Base Posted February 10, 2005 Posted February 10, 2005 Good thread, it's from before my time which must be the only reason I wasn't included on the Star Wars casting list tho. Clearly I should be Anakin since I'm a stroppy little bastard with bad hair and I can't act!!!! And Phil O'Keefe, you're definitely a Mace Windu :thu: er, carry on...
