Muscle Car:What's Your Favorite? Chevy/GM - Dodge/Chrysler - Ford

Recommended Posts

This only slightly has anything to do with music but, while I was listening to some tracks in my ride last night, I thought of this question. What kind of American Muscle cars do/did musicians drive? Hence the poll. Sly I changed the subject (added GM) 'cause my sister has a 1984 15th. Anniversary Trans Am stored in her garage! One of our drummers drives a 2002 Bonneville he swears is a hot rod! And our transportation guy has a Buick GS (no specs, but it looks potent) on a trailer under a cover in his garage. It's great hearing about all this heavy iron!

When I was in college, a friend of mine had a 1969 - 396 Chevy Nova with a Hurst shifter, Cragar wheels, 70 rear tires, etc. We used to hunt Vettes on the way to school, 2 got away, fought a '71 Camaro to a draw. Man what fun! Sly

I'm very sorry, but I don't like American cars. My favorite 'muscle car' is a Jaguar XK150S. Can't afford such a beast, so I have to do it with a XJ6 S1 :)

I posted early this morning, tryin' to beat the clock. Can't edit the poll window. I love the Hemi too, my all time favorite was/is the 1969 440 Dodge Charger with the pistol grip, in purple. My apologies to all those Road Runner and Barracuda fans. Sly

My first new off the lot car was a '69 dodge challenger, 440 engine developed 383 horse ('course, my memory ain't what it used to be). it was a special bee edition. it was colored "go man go"- no shit, that was the name of the color (at least in the owner's manual- most people thought it was orange). but boy could that car move- not too good on a curve, on ice or on gas- i'd be doing a hundred and thinking i couldn't be riding any faster than 60; very smooth. after that car, i became a hippie and bought an old chevy van, max crusing speed (when all was working) 55mph. Ok, ok, how to make this on topic.... My first car was a 318 Dodge Dart. Feh. Worked ok for my paper route. Saved up, my second car was: 1968 Chevelle 396 SS High output 396 big block (around 375 factory hp) Holley 750 double pumper Stewart Warner fuel pump Crane cam Edelbrock intake Hooker (I think they were) headers Turbohydromatic 400 / B&M shiftkit 12 bolt positrac rear L60's, American Racing classic alloy Autometer gauges Easily ran low 13's, probably mid 12's... - I never really pushed it. Get squirelly hitting second, chirp 3rd easily. A lot of fun in a straightline, understeered like a hog... but I was a punk kid and didn't realize yet straightlines are boring. Paid $2,500, put in about $1,000 in parts. I'd hate to think what it'd cost today.... ... AND NOW FOR THE ON TOPIC PORTION OF THIS POST: I was just thinking last night about how crappy the tape player in it sounded. Used to listen to Zenyatta Mondatta by the Police in it a lot... that recording has a peculiar sound to it to begin with, and this crappy stereo I had made it worse... really, really awful sound.. Never got around to putting a decent stereo in it, but to this day I associate a certain type of "trashy" low budget sound to that car. I was also pulled over for playing guitar while driving in it, but that's another story....

My first ride was a '68 Shelby GT500 convertible. 4 speed with factory air. About 14 ever made, but I had no idea at the time. 427-side bolt mains with 11.5:1, solid lifters, highrise aluminum intake, headers and an 850cfm double pumper, with oversized jets that still got sucked dry. 3rd gear redlined at 6000 RPM (a very bad idea to overrev the Ford big blocks) had you doing about 105MPH, and I kid you not, bang-shifting to 4th barked the back tires hard. Good God, what were my parents thinking turning a 16 year old loose in a car that could break the tires loose at over 100MPH? Truly astounding that I lived. Some amazing things happened in that car. Hmmm... let's see. I have only had a few cars that would qualify. A Plymouth Duster with the 340. Fast in a straight line, but handled pretty poorly and was VERY cold blooded. I hate to think what that car would have been like in the mornings had I lived in Maine instead of CA. I had a Challenger with a 440 for a while, always wanted a Super Bee! A kid rolled a Bee right in front of my wife's house when she was in high school. What a waste. That 440 was probably the fastest car I've ever owned. Murder on gas though... Fastest one I've ever been in (stock) was my uncle's Hemi 'Cuda. We lived on a 20 degree hill when I was in high school (Via Verde), and he and my dad had an argument one day and he peeled out and burned rubber UP HILL for a good 100' on a dry asphalt road. The one I'd like to have is what my high school girlfriend got on her 16th birthday. 1964 1/2 White Mustang convertable, 289, with a red Pony interior. 12K ORIGINAL miles  Of course, this was back in the mid-70's. You guys would LOVE the guy who lives across the street from me. He's INTO old muscle cars. Dig this: He's got a '71 El Camino with a 350 that is just CHERRY. Oh yeah, he's got a '68 Chevelle too. But wait - it gets better: He's got two T-Birds - a '55 and a 58. You could eat off these cars, they're so clean. Not exactly "muscle", but definitely VERY high "drool factor". He's retired and his cars are his hobby...

I was contemplating getting the car back on the street today as it'a a beautiful spring day here, and I park it in the winter. This post has clinched it. It's not really a muscle car, just an '88 Mustang LX Notchback. 302 of course...12 years and it still puts a smile on my face. There's someting about that first day after a car has been laid up... :thu:

Wouldn't a good topic be; what was the first stereo you remember in your car and what tape (CD's are too new, don't count) did you play until it broke? When my buddy and I drove from Toronto to Timmins and back in one weekend in a '63 Dart with the slant 6 and "3 on the tree", the only 8-track he remembered to bring was Harvest. Very suitable for a drive through northern Ontario.
It's OK to tempt fate. Just don't drop your drawers and moon her.

OK - a weirdo :D - Pontiac Grand Safari station wagon! 455 engine with a 4-barrel carb. Ugly, white mag wheels & power everything - came with a bitchin' 8-track player, too! :thu: A freakin' boat - but it hauled serious ass. I drove from N.O. to Atl. in that beast - going through Alabama, I glanced down & noticed I was doing 120 mph, smooth as air. Glad I saw it before the cops saw me...

'67 Dart GT, 273 hi perf. Quick and light, surprised a few off the line. I installed a Craig 8-track with (wow) a speaker in each door. Some tapes of the day: Cream - Disraeli Gears; Beatles - Sgt. Pepper's & Magical Mystery Tour; Steppenwolf (don't recall which); Creedence - Green River; Otis Redding live; The Doors - Strange Days. I think about riding around with the windows cranked (yes, by hand) down and the volume up as I experience the trunk thumpers of today who must have ten plus times the power and four times the speakers that little rig had. I could, though, play both the AM radio and my 8-track at the same time... Anybody remember a late night radio program out of Little Rock, Arkansas called Beeker Street? The DJ's name was Clyde Clifford and he came on around 11:00 PM. It was a 100,000 watt AM station that made it all the way up here most nights. I understand Clyde got busted for drugs on the air. Must have been late sixties, early seventies. Innagaddadavida, baby. Peace on Earth. Namaste Henry

Glad to see there are many Chrysler lovers here. I have been drag racing for 31 years and currently race in NHRA stock eliminator. My main car which I have raced since 71 is a 63 Plymouth Sport Fury with aluminum front end and a 426 Max Wedge. n a good day it runs 10.60s at 124 plus. My second car is a beautiful 70 Challenger freshly painted which is still waiting for a motor. In my machine shop I specialize Mopar engines and wrote tech articles for High Performance Mopar mag from 94 untill 2000. Cars and music, what else could a guy need. Paul.
