Nollykin
I have confused myself majorly. While looking through various interface cards... like Aardvark, Hoontech, etc. I found a lot of them sport "S/PDIF" stuff. I tried to find out what exactly it is used for... but to no avail. All I can find is other ads. Sony/Phillips Digital InterFace... I know it is a way of transmitting digital audio signals... I found out there is a converter for the Sound Blaster Live! - which I am applicable for. I was trying to find out if this could be of use to me - I was thinking of getting that, then connecting some hardware up to the s/pdif slots. Is that good? Or am I totally off track? I am just looking for some decent digital input systems, without spending much. But im also curious, I want to learn this stuff :) Would I be right in saying you could buy a little mixer, with S/PDIF out, put it into a S/PDIF in, and bob's yer proverbial uncle? Or would I be way off course? I'm so confused right now  :freak: :) Nolly "Money, Bitchez and Cheese!" http://www.playspoon.com/nollykin/files/voxline.gif "I never thought about it, and I never stopped to feel - But I didn't want you telling me just what to think was real. Alndln
Yes,SPDIF is a digital connection and a way to transfer digital information. With digital there's a/d,d/a(analog to digital/digital to analog) conversions.Let's say you have a digital mixing board with digital(SPDIF)out, you can then connect the spdif out of your board and connect it to the in(SPDIF in) of your soundcard and transfer the sound with no extra noise and perserve your signal with no added artifacts(in theory). The problem is that all ad/da converters are not all created equal. In other words although the sounblaster has digital,it gets converted to analog with cheap sounding d/a(digital to analog)converters, not to mention that this particular card can only work at 48hz(not 44hz)and has notoriusly bad drivers as well.Get a quality card ie:Echo/M-Audio/RME ect.and save yourself a headache, and save yourself from buying twice. Duhduh
The SoundBlaster Live! card has the Emu 1010K(?) chip in it. If you download drivers from Emu, it will convert ad/da much better. (Or so Im told. I did try this on a friends computer using PT Le and id DID work much better!) I think the Soundblaster will be an excellent start into the digital world for you.
